Maya Lin land bridge construction underway

Earth is being moved by prime contractor Kiewit Pacific at the site of the Confluence Project’s major salute to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Maya Lin land bridge connecting Fort Vancouver with the Columbia River waterfront.

If all goes well, the bridge and trail will be completed a year from now, according to Confluence Project spokesperson Bob Balaski.

The $12.25 million project conceived by Lin, the architect and designer of the Vietnam Veterans Wall in Washington, D.C., was engineered by Seattle architect Johnpaul Jones.

Work currently underway is preparatory to pouring foundations for the structure that will soar across Highway 14. The quarter-mile trail and bridge connects the Old Apple Tree Park, just south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe right-of-way and the Vancouver National Historic Site near E 5th Street just north of the Fort Vancouver stockade.

The 40-foot-wide concrete bridge will be landscaped and will have observation points. The walkway, which will be 12 feet wide, will accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists.

Steve Morasch appointed to
county planning commission

Steve C. Morasch, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt attorney, has been appointed to the Clark County Planning Commission. Morasch succeeds Lonnie Moss, who recently resigned from the seven-member planning organization.

Morasch is a graduate of Willamette University and the Lewis & Clark College law school.

Other planning commission members are Milada Allen, Ron Barca, Dick Deleissegues, Jada Rupley, George Vartanian and Jeff Wriston.
