Carol Keljo, owner of Security Signs, has been selected as one of the Portland Business Journal’s Orchid Award Winners. She is profiled in the Women in Business special publication. The Orchid Award is the Portland Business Journal’s annual recognition of 25 women from the Portland business community who have shown extraordinary leadership and accomplishment over the past year. The editors selected Keljo for her civic and business accomplishments in Portland, and Clark County. Security Signs is number 25 in the Portland Business Journal’s list of top 50 women-owned businesses. Keljo is chair-elect of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. Chuck Michael to manage
Chuck Michael, 35-year banking veteran, has joined First Independent Bank as senior vice president and manager of commercial and industrial banking. Michael most recently was senior vice president and manager of commercial and industrial lending at the Bank of the Cascades, Portland. At First Independent, Michael will oversee commercial banking teams in Vancouver, Portland and Bellevue. He will be recruiting additional commercial bankers and support staff for both the Portland and Bellevue offices. Michael is a member of the Portland Chamber of Commerce/Portland Business Alliance. He is also corporate chairman of the Portland Light the Night Walk for Luekemia. Val Ogden to speak at WSU Val Ogden, retired state representative, will give the keynote address at Washington State University Vancouver’s 17th commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the Amphitheater at Clark County. Ogden was a Democratic state representative for the 49th District for five terms, ending in 2002.She was instrumental in gaining capital funding for WSU Vancouver’s Salmon Creek Campus. She also served a term as national president of the Order of Women Legislators. Currently, Ogden is chair of the Southwest Washington Center for the Arts, is a board member of the Southwest Washington Child Care Consortium and is a member of the WSU Vancouver Advisory Board. The university, which will admit freshmen and sophomores for this first time this fall, will grant more than 700 degrees this year, of which 154 are masters degrees. More than 40 percent of the undergraduates achieved honors distinction, according to Washington State University President . W. Lane Rawlins, who with WSU Vancouver chancellor Hal Dengerink will present diplomas during the commencement program. Graduating senior Laurie Giacomini will receive the Chancellor’s Award for Student Achievement. The student body will honor Christopher Plouffe with the Student’s Award for teaching excellence. Barry Hewlett will receive the Research Excellence Award for outstanding scholarly achievement. Bart Phillips, executive director of the Columbia River Economic Development Council will be presented with the Chancellor’s Award for Service to WSU Vancouver. Phillips led community support for expanding WSU Vancouver into a four-year institution. Public access for commencement in the amphitheater begins at noon. People The Southwest Washington Regional SWAT Team earned second place in an Oregon Tactical Officers Association SWAT competition in Medford last week. Members of the competing team were Joe Graaff, Steve Lobdell, Marshall Henderson, John Ringo, and Bill Pardue, all of the Vancouver Police Department, and Pete Muller of the Clark County Sheriff’s Department. Calendar Sign-in time for Open-Mic Poetry Night, led by Rivkah Loewus, in the Vancouver Community Library, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard, is 6:45 p.m. this evening. n The new Public Playhouse starts its season with a gala opening accompanying Moliere’s The Imaginary Invalid at 8 p.m. this evening in the Columbia Arts Center, 400 W Evergreen Boulevard. General admission this evening is $14. General admission on other nights is $12.
