Registration deadline for Dick Hannah’s STRIVE 2 DRIVE July 6

Area high school students have until 5 p.m. on Monday, July 6, to register or update their high school academic information for a chance to win their choice of one of eight new cars or a check for $15,000 in Dick Hannah Dealerships‘ Academic Achievement Initiative, the STRIVE 2 DRIVE.

To be eligible, a students must be 14-years of age or older, have been a full-time high school student this just-ended academic year, and either improved his/her second-semester GPA over first-semester’s by 0.5, OR achieved an average 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Previous winners had just completed their freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior years. Home schooled students are also eligible in accordance with the official rules, also found at the website. The drawing will be held at Portland International Raceway at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14. Students must be present to win. On-site check-in begins at 4 p.m.

In addition to the STRIVE 2 DRIVE grand prize drawing of a car or check, other drawings will feature an iPad, a Kindle Fire, and more. A college fair is being added this year for students and parents to gain post-high school opportunity information. To register, a student or parent needs to go to www.dickhannah.com/strive2drive.

Harmony Sports Complex upgrades to allow for expanded soccer play

Unknown-1Two new synthetic fields opened last Friday at Harmony Sports Complex in east Vancouver, allowing year-round use by youth and young adult soccer players. Washington Timbers secured financing to convert two former grass fields to synthetic turf and add field lights and fencing. Lights still need to be installed. Washington Timbers serves about 3,500 soccer players, ages 5 to 19. The vast majority of players live in Clark County. The county leases 54 acres to the Harmony Sports Association, which has license agreements with the Washington Timbers for soccer and Cascade Little League for baseball and softball. Harmony Sports Association is responsible for maintenance and operations. The complex is located at NE 192 Ave and NE 18 Ave.

First annual Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale draws huge crowd

11080694_10205033529130552_2630132872369118485_oThe First Annual Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale, presented by the Greater Clark County Rotary Foundation, drew a huge crowd of bargain hunters to Evergreen High School on Saturday, June 27th. In just over six hours, the event drew over 2,200 shoppers.”We had close to 150 vehicles dropping off donations during the week, and from what I can tell, that represented close to 225 families,” says Becky Willey, marketing coordinator of the event. The sale is slated to be an annual event, held the last Saturday in June. All proceeds will benefit the community programs supported by the Greater Clark County Rotary Foundation and members of the Rotary Club of Greater Clark County.

50 and Better Stars & Stripes Dance July 1

The annual Stars & Stripes Dance is set for Wednesday, July 1, at 10:15 a.m. Live music will be provided by John Lazzari.
