Radical Reels Tour stops in Battle Ground Mar. 4

The Banff Mountain Film Festival will present its 2014 Radical Reels Tour at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 4 at the Battle Ground Cinema, 1700 SW Ninth Ave. in Battle Ground. Tickets are $15. Proceeds will benefit the Volcano Rescue Team. The Radical Reels program is made up of short, action-packed climbing, paddling, mountain biking, BASE jumping, skiing, snowboarding, and other adrenaline sport films. The Volcano Rescue Team (VRT) was formed in 1986 under the auspices of North Country EMS. This organization provides a resource to handle mountain-related incidents with the opening of Mt. St. Helen’s to climbing. Members are highly trained in all aspects of rescue and emergency medical services. training goes beyond search training and includes all aspects of mountain rescue, cave rescue, avalanche SAR, high angle rescue, crevasse rescue.

City of Vancouver and WSU Vancouver launch 2014 “#nextchapter” program Mar. 5

City of Vancouver and WSU Vancouver will present the 2014 “#nextchapter” program from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Mar. 5 at the City Hall Lobby, 415, W. Sixth St. in Vancouver. Now in its second year and with a digital learning theme, #nextchapter is Vancouver’s annual community-wide discussion of compelling cultural trends in the emerging digital economy.

The project is led by co-chairs Dr. Dene Grigar, director of the Creative Media and Digital Culture program at WSUV, and Jack Burkman, council member for the City of Vancouver. Speakers include: Sandra Towne, Manager of Planning and Policy Team, City of Vancouver; Dr. Renny Christopher, Vice Chancellor, WSUV; Nancy Tessman, Executive Director, Fort Vancouver Regional Library District; Mike Bomar, President, Columbia River Economic Development Council; Theressa Dulaney, Vice President of Communications for Oregon and Southwest Washington, Comcast; and Dr. Cathy Davidson via Skype from Duke University

The selected reading for 2014 is Cathy N. Davidson’s book, “Now You See It: How Technology and Brain Science Will Transform Schools and Business for the 21st Century.” Dr. Davidson is a professor at Duke University, Durham, N.C. and is a leader in educational reform in both the classroom and workplace. 500 free copies of the book “Now You See It” will be distributed throughout Vancouver.

Citizens are invited to read the book and participate in numerous activities planned around the community from March 7 through May 9, including workshops at libraries, a film festival, and educational programs at schools. Davidson will be in Vancouver in person on Friday, May 9 to present the first lecture at a Columbia River Economic Development Council luncheon and a second, free public lecture that evening at the Kiggins Theatre. Remodeled Permit Center to open mid-March in first-floor space

The newly remodeled Clark County Permit Center will reopen to the public at 8 a.m. Monday, Mar. 17, on the first floor of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St. To get ready for the reopening, the temporary Permit Center on the second floor of the Public Service Center will be closed Thursday and Friday, Mar. 13 and Mar. 14. When the remodeled Permit Center opens, business hours will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Mechanical and plumbing applications previously faxed to the Permit Center will be ready for pickup on Tuesday, March 18. To make an appointment for the week of March 17 or later, call 360-397-2375 ext. 4807 or email the Permit Center at cnty.permitservciesappointment@clark.wa.gov. For more information, visit www.clark.wa.gov/development/permits/index.html.
