Fire District 3 pancake breakfast and open house June 1
Friday, May 31, 2013The 25th Annual Fire District 3 pancake breakfast and open house is set for Saturday, June 1 at Fire Station 31 in Hockinson. The all-you-can-eat breakfast is scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon. Breakfast includes pancakes, ham, eggs, orange drink, and coffee. Individuals eat for $5 or you can feed the whole family for $15. Proceeds will be used to purchase emergency medical equipment for the Fire District. Attendees will enjoy interactive displays, firefighting and emergency medical demonstrations, station tours, apparatus and equipment displays, Life Flight helicopter, and many more exciting events. The Hockinson Fun Days Parade starts at noon, followed by loads of fun at the Hockinson Fun Days carnival held at Hockinson Middle School.
Grass Valley Elementary selects new principle
Friday, May 31, 2013Camas students and staff at Grass Valley Elementary will welcome a new leader into the fold this fall. At the School Board’s regular meeting last Tuesday, Sean McMillan was approved to take the helm next year at Grass Valley. With ten years of experience under his belt as a principal in the Vancouver School District, McMillan brings a wealth of knowledge to Camas. “I am so pleased Mr. McMillan will join our team next year,” said Superintendent Mike Nerland. “He is an experienced administrator with a passion for education and a love for children.” McMillan replaces current Principal Patricia Erdman, set to retire at the end of the school year.
Sign-ups Start June 1 for the Library’s 2013 Summer Reading Program
Friday, May 31, 2013Children and teens can have fun and earn rewards while keeping their reading skills sharp with free summer reading programs at Fort Vancouver Regional Library District libraries and bookmobiles. The district’s summer reading programs run Saturday, June 1 through the end of August, with sign-ups beginning tomorrow and ending Aug. 15. All activities, events and rewards are free. All rewards must be claimed by Aug. 31.
Children ages birth through 19 can participate with different criteria for different age groups. Theme for ages zero to 11 is “Dig into Reading; for ages 12 to 19 is “Beneath the Surface.” Prizes are awarded as the criteria are met. Parents also can enter their children up to age 11 in grand-prize drawings held at participating libraries. Prizes include a one-year family membership to OMSI, The Oregon Zoo, Washington State Parks, and many more.
In 2012, 16,451 children ages zero to 11 years were signed up for FVRL’s summer reading program. The participants spent more than 4,829,400 minutes in reading and other literary activities on their own, or with their parents or guardians. Garage sale for ROCKSOLID Community Teen Center today, tomorrow
Friday, May 31, 2013The community is invited to a garage sale at ROCKSOLID Community Teen Center today, Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the teen center, 12919 NE 159th Ave., Brush Prairie. The garage sale is one of their larger fundraising events of the year.
The after-school center is setup for 5th thru 12th grade students in the Battle Ground & Hockinson School Districts. By providing a place for kids that is safe and fun with adult supervision and good peer support, they hope to affect lives and influence the future choices and good decisions for local teens. They are a non-profit organization that relies totally on community support/donations, grants, and fundraisers.
