“Bees and the Trees” at the next Master Gardener meeting Feb. 5

The public is invited to the next Clark County Master Gardener Foundation Meeting this Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the CASSEE Center, Room 202/205, 11104 NE 149th St. in Brush Prairie. The event is free and there is no registration.

This month’s discussion, “Bees and the Trees” will be led by Mark Hallenbeck, a local Mason Bee breeder and supplier. Hallenbeck developed an interest in bee keeping nearly thirty years ago as a young college student. He now breeds Mason Bees for pollinating gardens and orchards in the Northwest and enjoys sharing his knowledge with others. Following the discussion discounted bee breeding starter kits and supplies will be available for purchase.

The Master Gardener Foundation of Clark County (MGF) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994. In cooperation with Clark County and Washington State University, MGF is dedicated to promoting research-based horticultural practices at the 78th Street Heritage Farm and other venues across Clark County through educational programs which preserve or enhance the environment. “Canapes, Cupcakes and Couture” fashion show at Divine Consign Feb. 7

Divine Consign, 904 Main St. in downtown Vancouver, will host a fashion show of new spring styles on Thursday Feb. 7, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $30 at the door, but can be pre-purchased for $25 at Divine Consign or online at www.divineconsignfurniture.org.

The show will feature the latest fashion from Willows, an upscale clothing boutique, and Etcetera, a division of Carlile Etcetera that carries couture-level lines. Guests will enjoy light appetizers, cupcakes from Divine Bites, and wine. $10 raffle tickets will be available for a chance to win a new Coach purse full of surprises. All proceeds from the event will support community charities through the Gifts For Our Community Grant Program.

Deadline for the 2013 General George C. Marshall Awards nominations today at 5 p.m

The Marshall Public Leadership and Youth Leadership committees are seeking nominations for the annual General George C. Marshall Public and Youth Leadership Awards. These awards are part of the Celebrate Freedom program organized by the Fort Vancouver National Trust. The program is a series of festive and educational events that inspire all generations to strengthen the community values of leadership, public service, lifelong learning, and patriotism. Nominations for both award programs may be submitted by individuals or organizations and must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1. Freezer Friday Fundraiser for Children’s Center at Mt. Tabor Brewing this Friday

Mt. Tabor Brewing, 113 W 9th St. in downtown Vancouver, will offer a rare opportunity to purchase t-shirts designed by Freezer Friday artist Charlie Layton  for Vancouver’s monthly Art Walk, this Friday, Feb. 1. The t-shirts cost $20 and $10 of each shirt sold will be given to Children’s Center. Layton, a Pennsylvania-based artist, began drawing various scenes on his refrigerator with a dry erase pen every Friday morning as he drank his coffee and posted the pictures to his Facebook page. Layton has recently collaborated with Moreland Print, a Northwest printing company, to create three different designs for the fundraiser. Children’s Center is a private, nonprofit, state-licensed community mental health agency founded in 1989 by a group of concerned citizens committed to providing quality mental health services for children in our community.
