“Legs About Town” art exhibit debuts tomorrow

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

Local artists have accepted a challenge to decorate mannequin legs to help promote the latest fundraiser for Children’s Center, “Glamorous Gams.” The artful legs will be on display at different public locations throughout Clark County. The public is invited to vote for their favorite leg. Score sheets and a list of  the locations of the legs can be downloaded from Children’s Center’s website.  Sheets must be turned in to Children’s Center by Sept. 19.

The artist of the leg that receives the highest score will receive a People’s Choice Award at the “Glamorous Gams” event on September 29 at the Hilton in Vancouver. The event will feature thirteen community “movers & shakers” who will compete as their alter egos and strut the catwalk to display their “glamorous gams.” The legs will be sold at silent auction that evening.

Children’s Center is a nonprofit agency that serves children, youth and families through comprehensive community-based mental health services. Over 95% of the families served live in poverty; the agency sees over 400 children weekly. For more information, visit www.thechildrencenter.org.

Phase Two of Janice Arnold exhibit opens Aug. 3 at City Hall

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

The opening of phase two of Janice Arnold‘s exhibit “Uncharted Territory” will take place in the lobby of City Hall, 415 W. 6th St. in Vancouver, on Friday, Aug. 3, from 5 to 9 p.m., as part of the Vancouver Downtown Association‘s “Art in the Heart.”

Arnold, a nationally recognized fiber artist, is the daughter of local cartographer Phil Arnold, famous for his hand-drawn maps. Mr. Arnold passed away earlier this year, and phase two of “Uncharted Territory”  is a combination of the artist’s fiber work and her father’s maps. The artist describes the exhibit as “an exploration of the artistic intersections between a father/daughter working in olde world art-forms.”

Arnold will conduct a presentation and tour of the exhibit on Monday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Aspen Conference Room of City Hall. The artwork will be on display through November and can be viewed during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on Arnold and her work, visit  www.jafelt.com.
