Fire District 3 pancake breakfast and open house, Hockinson Fun Days Carnival June 2
Thursday, May 31, 2012The 24th Annual Fire District 3 Pancake Breakfast and Open House is set for Saturday, June 2, at Fire Station 3-1, 17718 N.E. 159 St. in Hockinson. The all-you-can-eat breakfast is scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon. Breakfast includes pancakes, ham, eggs, orange juice, and coffee. Individuals eat for $5 and families are $15. Proceeds benefit Oregon Health and Science Univiersity‘s Knight Cancer Institute. Proceeds from the event will fund research for treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors and help local residents such as Shawna Miller, who was diagnosed with GIST on July 2, 2011.
The open house is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon. Attendees will enjoy interactive displays, firefighting and emergency medical demonstrations, station tours, apparatus and equipment displays, Life Flight helicopter, and more. There will be a “water squirt” for kids, an auto extrication demonstration, a real structure fire and rescue in the training tower, and the popular K-9 Unit demonstration.
The Hockinson Fun Days Parade starts at noon, followed by the Hockinson Fun Days Carnival, held at Hockinson Middle School, 15916 N.E. 182nd Ave. Attendees may park at Hockinson High School, 16819 N.E. 159th St., and ride the free shuttle bus to all events. Brandon Vick announces candidacy for 18th District State Representative
Thursday, May 31, 2012Brandon Vick yesterday announced his candidacy and has filed to run for the State House of Representatives, 18th District. Vick hopes to use his knowledge to help improve employment opportunities in Clark County. While stressing the importance of the need “to foster a strong business environment so that Washington can get back to work and thrive,” Vick is also “committed to reducing the size of government, reducing spending, and providing much-needed tax relief for families and small businesses.” Vick also hopes to address energy policy, focusing on hydropower as a renewable energy source. Vick, a graduate of Hudson’s Bay High School, Clark College, and Washington State University Vancouver, owns a landscape construction business and resides in the Felida neighborhood with his wife, Darci. They are expecting their first child this autumn. He is currently the chairman of the Clark County Republican Party and was recently honored with Vancouver Business Journal’s “Accomplished Under 40” award. Police Activities League holds giant parking lot sale June 1, 2
Thursday, May 31, 2012The Vancouver Police Activities League (PAL) will hold its Spring Cleaning Fundraiser and Parking Lot Sale this weekend, and PAL invites local bargain hunters to browse the bonanza of items for sale. The event will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, June 1, and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel overflow parking lot on the corner of C and 12th Streets. All proceeds go directly to PAL, which serves youth with both athletic and academic programs including boxing, an annual summer football camp, basketball, after-school programs, summer fishing field trips, environmental education programs, and literacy. Local healthcare nonprofit hires chief medical officer
Thursday, May 31, 2012Community Home Health & Hospice (CHHH) has hired Dr. Sandra C. Broeren as chief medical officer to oversee the agency’s inpatient and outpatient hospice programs. Broeren will collaborate with agency leaders and provide medical direction and oversight of the entire hospice program. She will contribute to program quality, growth, development, and staff and community education, as well as fostering relationships with community partners. Broeren has roots in Clatskanie, Oregon, and has long desired to return to the Pacific Northwest. A community-based nonprofit organization, CHHH has served the healthcare needs of Washington and Oregon families since 1977. The nonprofit offers home care personal services, home health, hospice, and bereavement services in Clark, Cowlitz, Wahkiakum Counties in Washington and Columbia County in Oregon.
