WSU Vancouver April 10: “The Militarization of Main Street” with Radley BalkoPosted April 4th, 2012
Washington State University Vancouver (WSUV) invites the community to attend a free presentation, “The Militarization of Main Street,” to be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, in WSUV’s Dengerink Administration Building, room 110. Once reserved for emergency situations in which lives were in immediate danger, SWAT teams today are used to bust pot smokers, poker games, even to perform regulatory inspections. Speaker Radley Balko looks at the rise of SWAT teams and America’s increasingly reactionary, militaristic approach to policing.
Balko is a senior writer and investigative journalist for Huffington Post, where he writes about criminal justice and civil liberties. He has been published in a variety of media outlets, and his work has been cited in opinions by the U.S. Supreme Court and the Mississippi Supreme Court. Balko has testified before Congress on police militarization, which is the topic of his talk and of the book he is currently writing. Last year, the Los Angeles Press Club named Balko its Journalist of the Year. You can read Balko at www.huffingtonpost.com, as well as at his personal blog, www.theagitator.com.
This event is free and open to all. To reserve your seat, RSVP online here. The event is sponsored by KOUG Radio, the VanCougar, and the Salmon Creek Journal. WSUV is located at 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave. in Salmon Creek.
