The Lewis River Rotary Club of Battle Ground, along with the Jubitz Family Foundation, will dedicate three “Peace Poles” on Earth Day, Friday, April 21. This coincides with other Rotary clubs planting over 130 Peace Poles around Rotary District 5100 on that date. The schedule for the planting and dedications is:

  • 10 a.m.: Battle Ground Library, 1207 SE 8th Way in Battle Ground
  • Noon: Wildlife Botanical Gardens on CASEE’s campus, 11000 NE 149th St. in Brush Prairie
  • 4 p.m.: RockSolid Teen Center, 12919 NE 159th St. in Brush Prairie

The first Peace Pole was planted in Japan by Masahisa Goi in the mid-1950s. Mr. Goi, whose family was greatly affected by World War II, dedicated his life to spreading the message, “May peace prevail on Earth.” The original Peace Poles were meant to cause people to reflect on the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II. Today, there are over 200,000 others installed worldwide.
