Heart screenings for young athletes Aug. 4Posted August 2nd, 2012
PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center and the Quinn Driscoll Foundation are offering “Young Champions” heart screenings for student athletes this Saturday, Aug. 4, at PeaceHealth Southwest’s Heart & Vascular Center. It is estimated that one in 500 middle and high school students have undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The Quinn Driscoll Foundation is named for 13-year-old Quinn Driscoll, an athlete at Wy’ East Middle School who died in 2009 after suffering cardiac arrest while running. Heart screenings can detect HCM using an echocardiogram, or ultrasound, of the heart, in addition to a comprehensive EKG. Registration is required. To schedule a screening, call 360-514-7755 or register at www.swmedicalcenter.org. A $25 donation to the Quinn Driscoll Foundation is suggested to support future screening events. Students must have a signed parental waiver and completed health history questionnaire in order to receive the heart screening. Download the forms here.
