The Vancouver City Council reviewed the results of its “What’s Next Vancouver?” survey at a workshop on Monday night. The survey was conducted between June 15 and Aug. 7 as part of the development of the City’s new strategic plan. The four-question survey was taken by 2,227 people who live, work or play in Vancouver. Survey results include:

* Respondents agree that parks and trails lead the way in making Vancouver special. A close second is access to the amenities offered by the city’s proximity to Portland. Other highly ranked characteristics included family friendly, affordable, good schools and the community’s rich history.

* When asked what’s missing in the community, transportation needs topped the list, including street maintenance, more transit options, and a new Columbia River bridge. Amenities came in second, with a desire for more restaurants, shopping, night-life, year-round community events, public art and a performing arts center.

* The “dream big” question asked respondents to consider if an unexpected gift of millions of dollars were suddenly made available for programs or projects and many community members said they’d want it to go to transportation projects. Second on the list was expansion and improvements for parks, trails and recreation opportunities.

Public input opportunities related to the development of the City’s Strategic Plan will continue throughout the rest of the year. The City plans to complete the plan in early 2016.
