Friends of the Carpenter (FOC) invite the community to join them for a Homeless Memorial Service this evening, Thursday, Dec. 21, from 5:45 to 7 p.m., on the steps on St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1309 Franklin St. “The Homeless Memorial event holds a special place in our hearts as we pause and remember our neighbors who have died in the past year,” says Tom Iberle, executive director.

The memorial will include a candle lighting service, as well as a short program with special guests. The event is co-hosted by Outsiders Inn, whose mission is to use a multi-pronged approach to tackling the problem of homelessness, separation and discrimination through advocacy, awareness and support.

FOC’s event coincides with the 2017 National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day. Since 1990, the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) has sponsored the event on Dec. 21, the first day of winter and longest night of the year, to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember those who have died while living without a permanent home. Auditions for the 20 roles and understudies will be held Sunday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m., at Magenta, with callbacks on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 6:30 p.m. Teens over 12, and who look like high school students, will be considered – ages are flexible. Portland Children’s Museum to open new exhibit in February

Friday, December 15, 2017

Portland Children’s Museum will open “Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tet Festival” on February 9, 2018, a new exhibition to promote understanding of Vietnamese culture. Children and their caregivers will delight in the opportunity to discover the beauty, sights and sounds of Vietnam through its most important celebration of the year, Tet.

Through interactive exhibits, families will immerse themselves in Vietnamese culture, gain appreciation for traditions, values, and daily experiences of people who live in Vietnam, and discover similarities and differences between their lives in the U.S. and the lives of children in Vietnam.

Visitors will be welcomed through the New Year gateway, and transported to the Tet Festival in modern day Vietnam. The immersive Marketplace experience is the perfect place to select traditional flowers and faux food items to prepare for the celebration. At the Back in the Home section, families can pose for interactive family photos, dressing up in customary Ao Dai.

Funded through a highly competitive national initiative by the Freeman Foundation Asian Culture Exhibit Series, and developed by Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, the Voyage to Vietnam exhibition is traveling to nine children’s museums as part of a national tour.
