“On the Water” maritime workshop for youth July 31 – Aug. 4

Wind & Oar Boat School and the National Park Service at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site will be offering “On the Water,” a hands-on workshop exploring maritime history for youth ages 10 to 15. Participants will apply math and science skills to build a simple skiff, rotating through several stations over the course of the week-long workshop.

Along with the boat building activities, they will learn about the maritime heritage of the Pacific Northwest, with topics including waterways as transportation routes, early Euro-American exploration, maritime fur trade, 19th century carpentry and blacksmithing, and human manipulation of the Columbia River.

The workshop will take place at the Historic Hangar at Pearson Air Museum, Monday, July 31 through Friday, August 4. The final day of the workshop will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for all participants, and will include launching the boat at Vancouver Lake. Each session is limited to 10 participants, with reservations on a first-come, first-served basis. For reservations call 360-816-6244.

Leadership Clark County announces leadership changes

Leadership Clark County (LCC) has announced governance changes for the coming year. Incoming Executive Committee members include:

  • Mike True (Chair, LCC Class of 2012)
  • Elizabeth Scott (Vice Chair, LCC Class of 2015)
  • Sharif Burdzik (Immediate Past Chair, LCC Class of 2009)
  • Linda Reid (Treasurer, LCC Class of 2009)
  • Jim Mains (Secretary, LCC Class of 2011)
  • Jeff Groff (Member at Large, LCC Class of 2009)

New members joining the Board of Directors include: Tim Cook (LCC Class of 2015), Tony Johnson (LCC Class of 2000), George Lackey (LCC Class of 2017 one-year representative), Sharon Pesut (LCC Class of 2004), and Rick Torres (LCC Class of 2015).

The Board of Directors for the coming year is comprised of: Tina Krause (LCC Class of 2012), John McDonagh (Chamber Representative), and Kathleen Meyers (LCC Class of 2014).

Incoming committee chairs include: Alumni Committee: Co-chairs Christine Humphrey (LCC Class of 2016) and Jerry Todd (LLC Class of 2016), Curriculum Committee: Tina Krause (LLC Class of 2012), Development Committee: Jim Mains (LCC Class of 2011), Finance Committee: Linda Reid (LCC Class of 2009), Governance Committee: Elizabeth Scott (LCC Class of 2015), Marketing Committee: Co-chairs Michael Fish (LCC Class of 2015 ) and Bob Sable (LCC Class of 2015), Recruitment Committee: Co-chairs Eddie Allen (LCC Class of 2014) and Tracey Malone (LCC Class of 2014)

VDA’s Quarterly Preview Meeting July 13

A very exciting future is developing on Vancouver’s waterfront, and Vancouver’s Downtown Association (VDA) invites the public to come to a free meeting where all three components of the total redevelopment will share their stories. Sponsored by the Port of Vancouver USA, the Quarterly Preview Meeting is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Representatives from Gramor Development, the Port of Vancouver, and the City of Vancouver are slated to present updates and answer questions from the public. Additionally, VDA committees will share details on key projects that are producing exciting results in the city center. 

The Quarterly Review Meeting is Thursday, July 13, from 7:45 to 9 a.m., at Warehouse ’23, 100 Columbia St. RSVPs are requested to admin@vdausa.org.

50+ Travel Expo July 12

Vancouver Parks and Recreation’s 50 and Better Programs is hosting a 50+ Travel Expo this week, at Marshall Community Center. Staff with 50 and Better Programs plan and execute over a dozen trips every month throughout the year.

People 50 and Better in the community are encouraged to attend the expo to learn about the types of trips offered. Refreshments will be available, and participants will have the chance to win some fabulous door prizes from sponsors. Those that sign up for any trip through September 2017 on July 12 will receive $5 off registration.

The 50+ Travel Expo is this Wednesday, July 12, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., in the Oak/Elm Rooms at Marshall Community Center, 1009 E McLoughlin Blvd. in Vancouver.
