Vancouver NAACP hosts annual Juneteenth Celebration June 17

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, landed at Galveston, TX, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were then free.

Join the Vancouver NAACP Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., for a community Juneteenth Celebration with a theme of “Education is Empowerment.” This event will take place at Clark College Foster Hall, 1933 Ft. Vancouver Way.

This year’s celebration will feature a pie contest, music, spoken word, African dancing, open mic, vendors, food and more. Spots are still available for vendors and talent. For more information, email: naacpvancouver@gmail.com. The event is also on Facebook, here.

Community Foundation inspires philanthropy with stories, milestones

The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington hosted its 2017 Annual Luncheon, themed Giving Out Loud, on Tuesday, June 6, at the Hilton Vancouver Washington. More than 600 people attended the event, which is regarded as southwest Washington’s preeminent celebration of local philanthropy.

The charitable foundation honored Greg and Michele Goodwin as their 2017 Philanthropists of the Year. The Goodwin’s support a variety of local nonprofits, and specifically, causes related to youth, health, education and mental health services. Michael Burgoyne, CFP(R) was also honored as the 2017 Friend of the Foundation for his professional and personal support to the Community Foundation’s mission.

Board chair Mark Matthias shared the Foundation’s 2016 accomplishments, which included reaching $181 million in total charitable assets–nearly a 75 percent annual increase. The local grantmaking organization also surpassed the mark of $150 million granted to nonprofits since its inception in 1984. Learn more at www.cfsww.org.

Retirement party for Evergreen Superintendent John Deeder this afternoon

Community members are invited to help celebrate the retirement of Evergreen Public Schools Superintendent John Deeder as he finishes a 48 year career in education, 15 years of it at Evergreen. The event will begin at 4 p.m. today, June 13, at Henrietta Lacks Health and BioScience (HeLa) High School, 9105 NE 9th St., with the program beginning at 4:30 p.m. Elected and appointed officials will present official proclamations and stories of Deeder’s career in education, along with saluting his community contributions.

2017 Let’s Take Flight! fundraiser raises over $128,000

The Fort Vancouver National Trust hosted over 200 attendees at a fundraiser for the Pearson Field Education Center on Saturday, May 20, to benefit aviation education for youth in the community. The Let’s Take Flight! event and associated campaign, raised over $128,000 from community members in support of the non-profit, aviation-based learning center. Presenting sponsor was Columbia Credit Union. The Boeing Company was the supporting sponsor. The featured keynote speaker was Jerry McWithey, director of flight operations at Insitu, Inc.
