First Friday Art Walk in downtown Vancouver May 5

daydream12x16It’s First Friday Artwalk in downtown Vancouver tonight, Friday, May 5. Shops and galleries will stay open late, and many will offer sales, samples, light appetizers, music, and wine tastings. Visitors to the downtown core are encouraged to share their experience on social media using the tag #dtVANwa! Additionally, last month’s Rainku project continues on sidewalks around downtown. Touchmark offers program for caregivers of those with Parkinson’s disease May 12

gator3211.hostgatorTouchmark at Fairway Village is hosting an afternoon designed to support those caring for someone with Parkinson’s disease. Starting at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 12, the program will feature three speakers. Heidi Chaimov is the executive director of Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon. She will offer information about the resources available to caregivers. Jan Beyer, a personal trainer with Touchmark Health & Fitness Club, will encourage caregivers to take care of themselves through exercise and offer tips to incorporate fitness into their daily routines. Edri Geiger will speak about her experience taking care of her late husband as he lived with Parkinson’s disease. There is no charge for the event. ESD 112, WSSDA to host School Board Candidate Information Night May 8

Individuals who may be interested in running for a seat on their local school board are encouraged to attend an upcoming informational session. Educational Service District 112, in partnership with the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA), will host a School Board Candidate Information Night on Monday, May 8, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at ESD 112, 2500 NE 65th Ave.

The meeting will be held in the ESD Conference and Institute Center.The program will feature a presentation by Tim Garchow, executive director for WSSDA, who will talk about the roles and responsibilities of a school board member. After his remarks, a panel of current school board members will discuss opportunities and challenges associated with serving as a school director.

Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and engage with other board members at the event. RSVPs are encouraged, but are not required. For questions or to RSVP, email wendy.niehaus@esd112.org.

City hosting one-day lifeguard, swim instructor hiring event May 6

thumb_pool_photos-12The City of Vancouver’s Parks and Recreation Department is now hiring more than 75 part-time lifeguards and swim lesson instructors at the Marshall and Firstenburg community centers. Vancouver Parks and Recreation will hold a one-day aquatics hiring event at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 6, at the Firstenburg Community Center, 700 NE 136th Ave. Interviews will begin at 3 p.m., and required swim tests will begin at 3:30 p.m. Eligible applicants must be at least 16 years old and be able to swim 500 yards (or 17 laps at the Firstenburg pool) in 13 minutes. Parks and Recreation staff is willing to work with applicants who can come close to that requirement to help them be successful.
