Genealogical class offered at CCGS Mar. 3

Friday, February 27, 2015

Those interested in researching their family’s genealogy can now take a class with the Clark County Genealogical Society (CCGS). “Get Your Ducks in a Row: Genealogical Housekeeping 201” will be held Tuesday, Mar. 3, at 10 a.m. Classes are taught by Jane Germann, a member of CCGS since 1984. She has been a mainstay of education, teaching classes from introductory to courthouse research to publishing and everything in between. Germann will discuss some easy and painless ways to keep track of genealogical files. Classes are $12 for CCGS members and $15 for non-members. The class fee can be paid with registration or at the door. Exact cash amount or check is appreciated. Although walk-ins won’t be turned away, preregistration is requested at: www.ccgs-wa.org. Classes with insufficient registration one week in advance will be canceled. Those registered will be notified and any fee paid will be refunded.

The VSO Chamber Series will present its annual Family Concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, Mar. 8, at Kiggins Theatre. Brass on the Loose is a lighthearted and fun introduction to the brass family of instruments by some of the area’s most renowned brass musicians. Also on the same program is Opera Quest Northwest, a group of five young singers and a pianist will bring a live program called “Opera the Great.” Opera Quest Northwest is a nonprofit group dedicated to bringing the world of opera to school-age children.

The sprightly brass repertoire will include music from the piccolo trumpet, trumpet, flugelhorn, french horn, trombone and bass trombone. Among the songs featured will be John Stanley’s Trumpet Voluntary, Bernstein’s West Side Story, Alexander Goedicke’s Concert etude forTrumpet, Mozart’s Rondo for Horn, Debussy’s Girl With the Flaxen Hair and a crowd-pleasing version of Tiger Rag (featuring Doug Peebles). This is a great concert for all members of the family.

“Opera the Great” blends beautiful opera excerpts with a humorous, interactive script. It’s educational—children learn opera history, characters, voice parts and famous melodies—and also great fun. Young audience members can try out opera gestures and singing styles, become part of the chorus, and even go onstage as opera characters. Tickets for adults are $25 and $10 for students. Children under 5 are free. For more information and tickets, visit www.vancouversymphony.org.
