Outdoor burning ban lifted after weather eases fire conditions
Tuesday, September 30, 2014The Clark County Fire Marshal has lifted a burning ban for all recreational and land clearing fires. The risk of wildfires has significantly declined because of recent rainfall, the forecast for more rain and cooler temperatures. Residents must follow all local outdoor burning regulations and burning permit requirements. Recreational campfires are allowed if built in improved fire pits in designated campgrounds, such as those found in local, county and state parks. Additional outdoor burning rules and information are available at www.clark.wa.gov/development/fire/burning.html. For questions, check with the Fire Marshal’s Office at 360-397-2186.
KGW named Station of the Year
Tuesday, September 30, 2014KGW was named Television Station of the Year by the Oregon Association of Broadcasters at its annual conference held Saturday, Sept. 27. The station has earned the title for 11 of the last 12 years. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding journalism and public service throughout the entire year. KGW.com was recognized as best television website.
KGW earned eight other “Awards of Excellence” for its journalism both on air and online, more than any other Portland television station. All areas of the station’s work earned awards including best coverage of breaking news, best documentary, photography, public service announcement and best public service campaign.
Additionally, The Oregon Association of Broadcasters has awarded its prestigious Broadcast Heritage Award to KGW broadcast operator, Dale Wakem. The award honors an individual who is currently employed or has worked in the radio and/or television industry in Oregon in a role other than general management or ownership for a minimum of 15 years. Wakem far exceeds the threshold for the award. He will celebrate 50 years of employment at KGW in November 2014, the only employee to reach that milestone in the station’s history.
40 NOW patrollers saturate downtown Vancouver this evening
Tuesday, September 30, 2014Volunteers with the Vancouver Police Department’s (VPD) Neighbors On Watch (NOW) program will participate in a “saturation patrol” this evening, Tuesday, Sept. 30, to look for, and report, suspicious activity. While VPD NOW has conducted this type of large-scale group patrol in the past, 40 volunteers have signed up to help – the most in the program’s six year history.
The 40 volunteers will be divided into 16 patrol teams. From 6 to 8:30 p.m., the teams will patrol on foot, bike and in vehicles across the city. One squad will also patrol in a specially equipped truck, looking for stolen vehicles. The citizen patrol teams will be supervised by Neighborhood Police Officers and the patrol routes will be directed based on areas that need special attention or increased police presence.
NOW volunteers are non-confrontational, highly visible, and do not take any law enforcement action. Each member of NOW had completed the NOW training academy and commits to a minimum of four hours of volunteer patrol time each month. NOW volunteers wear issued uniforms, place a NOW magnet on their vehicle while on patrol, and report anything out of the ordinary to police while on their patrols in the community.
