Sale closing on newest Skills Center-built home

house-600x450It took less than a month for the latest home built by Skills Center students to sell on the open retail market. The home, located at 6920 NE 104th Way near 72nd Avenue in the Village in the Glen (Phase 1) Development, was constructed by students in the Skills Center Construction Technology class during the 2012-2013 School year. This is the fourth consecutive year, local homebuilder Ott Gaither partnered with the Skills Center by providing the house plan, lot and financing. In addition, Gaither Homes will donate any profit above the cost of building and selling the home to the Clark County Skills Center Foundation. Entertainment, adventure and hands-on learning for girls and families at GirlFest Nov. 2

Hosted by Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington and presented by Wells Fargo, GirlFest will take place at the Portland Expo Center on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Girls can sit in the cockpit of an aircraft, climb a fire truck, try their hand at science experiments, plan world travel, earn a Girl Scout badge, make a marionette and more. Female role models in engineering, sports, technology, entrepreneurship, and health care will be on hand to help girls learn about and sample future careers. The event is open to all girls and their families, regardless of whether or not they are Girl Scouts. WSU Vancouver invites public to discuss the booming hospitality industry

WSU Vancouver‘s Chancellor’s Seminar Series will offer insight into the booming hospitality industry this Friday, Nov. 1 at 11:45 a.m. in the Firstenburg Student Commons. Tickets are $25 and include lunch, lecture and parking. Tickets can be purchased by calling 360-546-9580.

George Schweitzer, local hospitality industry executive, will discuss the driving forces behind regional growth in the industry and how they benefit the economy as a whole. Nancy Swanger, director and associate professor in the School of Hospitality Business Management at WSU, will offer perspective on the expansion of the hospitality business management program to WSU Vancouver.

WSU Executive Chef Jamie Callison will be present to sign his new cookbook, “The Crimson Spoon.” The 200-page, photo-illustrated cookbook features many of Callison’s highly acclaimed gourmet dishes and recipes. Recipes range from extravagant to simple and draw from each area of WSU’s food resources, such as the Organic Farm and Creamery, as well as from the Pacific Northwest. “The Crimson Spoon” will be available for $38.

First Friday in Old Town Battle Ground Nov. 1

People attending the First Friday event in Old Town Battle Ground will find delightful holiday vintage finds, wine tasting, and a fun and relaxing way to spend a Friday evening.

This month features a Moulton Falls Winery wine tasting at Nest, free chalk painting tips with Chalk Paint at Rusty Glamour, new local handmade items at DK Treasures, holiday-inspired gifts and refreshments at Country Charm and more.

The stores also collaborate together and offer a First Friday “passport.” Pick up a card in any of the vintage shops and get a “stamp” in each location. If the card is full, participants are entered to win gift certificates from the stores.

Old Town Battle Grounds, 316 East Main, also stays open late to provide customers with a warm beverage and dining options while celebrating a night on the town.
