Flexor T for tonight’s “Six to Sunset” concert at Esther Short Park

The Riverview Six to Sunset Concerts series continues tonight, Aug. 1, with Flexor T , at 6 p.m.in Esther Short Park. The concerts are held every Thursday through Aug. 29. They are free, open to the public and family friendly. The series is a wonderful opportunity to hear some of the Northwest’s most talented artists, enjoy food from great local vendors, and take advantage of everything downtown Vancouver has to offer.

Ducky Derby fundraiser wins big for Camas-Washougal community

image009Camas-Washougal Rotary Club’s Ducky Derby raised over $20,000 when 3,500 yellow, rubber ducks raced down the Washougal River last Sunday. Proceeds from the annual event help fund Rotary high-school scholarships as well as local and international service projects. The grand prize, a Hawaii condo vacation plus airfare for two, was won by Jacob Zarzana from Vancouver. The duck race began at noon when a front-loader donated by Nutter Corporation tipped its bucket and unloaded 3,500 plastic ducks off the Third Avenue Bridge into the water. From there the river’s current took over and swept the winning duck to the finish line in 18 minutes.

First Thursday Museum After Hours Lecture: Canneries and Communities on the Columbia

irene_martinThe next First Thursday After Hours Lecture will feature author Irene Martin speaking on the history of the local salmon-canning industry at the Clark County Historical Museum (CCHM). Doors open at 5 p.m., and the lecture begins at 7 p.m. Regular admission charged.

Born in England, raised in Canada, and a forty year resident of the U.S., Martin has specialized in Columbia River fisheries history and regional history in her writing career. Winner of the Governor’s Heritage Award in 2000, she is the author of numerous books and articles, and actively involved in her community, Skamokawa. She has fished commercially with her husband on the Willapa and Columbia Rivers and in Southeast Alaska and Bristol Bay.

CCHM is located in Vancouver’s 1909 Carnegie Library building. Regular museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A wheelchair accessible entrance to the museum is located on the east side of the museum building on 16th St. The 2013 First Thursday Museum After Hours Lecture Series program is sponsored by the Clark County Historical Preservation Commission and Applied Archaeological Research. Find out more at www.cchmuseum.org.

Kim Hash joins The Joy Team board of directors

The Joy Team, a positive thought non-profit organization in Vancouver, has announced the appointment of Kim Hash to its Board of Directors. Hash was elected with a unanimous vote on July 26 and officially joins the board immediately.

Hash is the director of development for Children’s Center, a nonprofit mental health agency serving the needs of children, youth and families in our community. Previously, she was the director of programs and donor relations for the Fort Vancouver National Trust. Hash is active in the community, a graduate of Leadership Clark County, serves on the Promotions Committee for the Vancouver Downtown Association and the Leadership Awards Committee for the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.
