New
grant paves way for bilingual nurses in the Northwest
The
Northwest Health Foundation (NWHF) recently announced a
$30,000 grant for Clackamas Community College to expand a
program that helps nurses with credentials from foreign
countries to become licensed in the United States,
specifically in the Pacific Northwest.
The
grant will enable more bilingual, bicultural nurses to
return to the practice of health care in the Pacific Northwest region.
The project is called the Workforce Improvement with
International Nurses (WIIN) Program.
"We
are excited to serve as the first expansion site for this
important program," says Robert K. Knight, Clark
College president. "Our nursing program is
nationally-recognized for the quality of education that we
provide and the positive impact of our graduates on health
care in our region. We are facing a long-term nursing
shortage with a special need for bilingual nurses."
Despite
a growing immigrant population, Oregon and Washington both
suffer from a shortage of qualified bilingual, bi-cultural
nurses.
WIIN was developed and
launched in 2004 with significant funding from the Northwest
Health Foundation, and has since graduated 62 highly
skilled, motivated and experienced nurses from 27 countries.
Clark
College and WSU have a well-established partnership to offer
nursing education opportunities on the WSU-Vancouver campus.
In 2006, a dual-enrollment process began, allowing nursing
students to complete a bachelor’s degree with the same ease
as students attending a four-year institution.
The
mission of the Northwest Health Foundation is to advance,
support and promote the health of the people in Oregon and
southwest Washington.
Applications available for Veterans
Parade at Fort Vancouver
The Fort
Vancouver National Trust is accepting entry applications for
the 24th annual Veterans Parade at Fort Vancouver presented
by the Lough Legacy. The annual community parade begins at
11 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, rain or shine. This
year’s parade theme is "Honoring the Buffalo Soldiers’
Service at Vancouver Barracks."
The
Veterans Parade at Fort Vancouver attracts more than 100
entries with approximately 2,500 individuals marching or
riding in the parade.
Parade
applications are available online at
www.fortvan.org, at the Fort Vancouver National Trust
office in the O.O. Howard House, 750 Anderson Street, or by
calling the Trust at 360-992-1808. Parade application
deadline is September 23.
The
parade grand marshal is First Citizen Royce Pollard,
former mayor of Vancouver and commanding officer at
Vancouver Barracks. Reviewing officer is Timothy
Lowenberg, Washington State Air National Guard.
As in
years past, the parade will begin at the east end of
Officers Row at the corner of Evergreen Boulevard and East
Reserve Street. In previous years, the parade continued
along Evergreen past the historic site, over I-5, and
proceeded downtown to Esther Short Park. This year, the
parade route will take place entirely on the Fort Vancouver
National Site. After going west along Officers Row, the
parade will turn south at the traffic circle and proceed
onto Fort Vancouver Way through the Vancouver Barracks, turn
east onto Fifth Street, pass the reconstructed Fort
Vancouver and end at the Pearson Air Museum.
