New evidence of multicultural village discovered at Fort

National Park Service and university archaeologists have discovered one of the homes of the multicultural village associated with Fort Vancouver. The village was home for 600 to 1000 Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) employees, their families, and visiting traders and travelers during the fur trade period.

"The people living in the village, in contrast to the 'gentlemen' and their families inside the fort, left no written records," says Doug Wilson, National Park Service Archaeologist and Faculty Member of the Department of Anthropology at Portland State University. "This excavation is a way to recover the history of this incredible community, which included people of many ancestries: American Indians from many tribes, Native Hawaiians, French Canadians, Europeans, Americans, and those of multiethnic origin – the Métis."

The Public Archaeology field school is a partnership of the Fort’s Northwest Cultural Resources Institute with Portland State University, Washington State University Vancouver and is supported by grants from the National Park Service and the Fort Vancouver National Trust.

The field school will run one more week at the village site until Saturday, July 24.  The village is west of the Fort Vancouver reconstruction north of the Vancouver Land Bridge. The public is welcome to visit Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Related to the field school, a new program at the Fort is bringing urban youth and families to the fort, to reconnect to the diverse histories of the Pacific Northwest through a series of day and overnight camps.

The urban youth program will continue through September. Contact Kimm Fox-Middleton at 360-816-6243 for more information.

BIA Announces new staff

Liz Pike

The Building Industry Association (BIA) of Clark County announced the addition of three new staff members this week. They are Steve Madsen as government affairs director; Liz Pike as political affairs director and Garrett Delano as coordinator for membership programs & services.

Steve Madsen

Madsen, who previously worked for the BIA’s government affairs department, will once again represent the BIA’s government affairs program. Madsen has operated his private practice, Law Offices of Steven B. Madsen PLCC, continuously since 1999, and prior to that worked for other private firms in Western Washington as well as the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office. He holds a J.D. from Seattle University and a M.B.A. from Westminster College of Salt Lake City. Madsen is a current member of the Woodland School Board, Washington State Bar Association and Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Bar Association.

Pike comes to the BIA with more than 30 years of professional business experience. A former elected member of the Camas City Council and owner of Pike Advertising Agency since 1995, she is a political consultant, with decades of experience in Clark County’s political landscape, and has organized numerous political activities and fundraising efforts.

Delano attended Washington State University and started his own company in 2008 called Support One Networks. In early 2010, he assisted the BIA in transitioning from a traditional print newsletter to an e-newsletter and continues to manage the newsletter project.

"We are delighted to have recruited such talented and experienced assets to our organization. We are continuously fighting to keep local businesses in business and with our recent hires, we will be able to provide better representation, programs and services to our members," says Avaly Mobbs, Executive Director.

The Building Industry Association (BIA) of Clark County is an 800-member trade association representing the interests of all business involved with land development, construction and the building industry. For more information, www.biaofclarkcounty.org.
