Art in the Heart planned Aug. 6-7

Thirteen Downtown Vancouver art galleries and Vancouver’s Downtown Association have joined forces to bring a free, family-friendly community event to Downtown Vancouver streets the first weekend of August. The “Art in the Heart” event kicks off Friday, Aug. 6, at 5:30 p.m. After the free concert, many local restaurants and bars will also have live music.

At 8:15 p.m., a beer garden and a live performance by Seattle’s Hit Explosion, on a stage sponsored by First Independent Bank, will be offered at Turtle Place at Seventh and Main Streets.

The galleries will be open again on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"It’s all about bringing feet to our street and enjoying our beautiful downtown," says VDA president Linda Glover.  "Our galleries are excellent.  The streets are pleasant and lined with beautiful flower baskets.  And there is nothing like good music to bring people together!"

Vancouver’s Downtown Association is a local nonprofit that sponsors events in support of the city center.  More information is available online at www.vdausa.org.

Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic could delay weekend travel

The Washington Department of Transportation is cautioning drivers that the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP) may delay traffic this weekend. The ride involves 10,000 cyclists riding from the Puget Sound area to Portland. To aid cyclists and drivers, STP organizers and WSDOT have coordinated traffic control at the several locations along the route. More information about the race, including a full route map, is available from the Cascade Bicycle Club at www.cascade.org/EandR/stp/index.cfm

On Sunday, July 18, Washington State Patrol and traffic control flaggers will stop southbound drivers at 15-minute intervals from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. as members of the Gold Wing motorcycle club escort groups of cyclists over the Lewis and Clark Bridge. Drivers on State Route 432 and nearby city streets can expect delays of up to 20 minutes. Riders crossing the bridge on Saturday, July 17, will not have a bridge escort and are expected to ride with traffic.
