Waterford Car Show draws nearly 2,000
The third annual Waterford at Fairway Village Car Show attracted more than 160 classic cars and 1,800 attendees. Every year, Waterford invites the community to celebrate the beginning of summer with a complimentary Car Show and Barbecue. "We had many people bring their cars to the show that had never been to the Waterford before," says Kellie Wagnild, Waterford’s Life Enrichment/Wellness director. "The ones who participated by bringing their cars stated that this is one of the best car shows they have ever been to. They thought that it was great that Waterford was doing this for the community, and they are planning on coming back next year." A full-service retirement community, Waterford is home to more than 240 people. It offers a wide range of retirement homes, lifestyles and services. The Waterford Health & Fitness Club is open to people over 40 years old and features a variety of fitness options. More information is available at WaterfordVancouver.com. Classic car enthusiasts have another opportunity to see their favorite vehicles on Saturday, July 17, when "Cruisin' the Gut 2010" arrives in downtown Vancouver. Drivers will start cruising Main Street at 4 p.m. Vancouver Pizza, one of the event sponsors, will have T-shirts available for $10. They are also offering a free full order of breadsticks in exchange for three cans of nonperishable food for Share and the purchase of a medium or large pizza or calzone. Clark County offers mosquito advice Recent record rainfall and high water have greatly expanded mosquito habitat across Clark County, resulting in a 150 percent increase in service calls to the Clark County Mosquito Control District compared with the same time last year. Residents in some areas are understandably concerned, said Steve Kessler, the district’s operations manager. The good news is that the vast majority of mosquitoes currently out and about are the ‘floodwater’ species, which doesn’t transmit West Nile Virus. The Mosquito Control District does not spray for adult mosquitoes at individual residences or neighborhoods. Eliminating mosquito habitat is the best way to control their numbers. Residents can do their part by eliminating breeding sources on their properties. To prevent mosquitoes from breeding:
Near rivers, where it is not practical to eliminate mosquito habitat, mosquito control crews use biological larvicide to treat mosquito larvae before they hatch. Each year, crews also treat tens of thousands of storm drains and catch basins to reduce mosquito populations at the source. Treating adult mosquitoes is less effective and yields temporary results; crews fog public areas only as a last resort. To prevent mosquito bites, residents are reminded to apply mosquito repellent and wear protective clothing when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk, and install or repair screens on windows and doors. With continued dry weather, the mosquito problem likely will ease, says Kessler. For more information on the county’s mosquito abatement program, see www.clark.wa.gov/public-health/about/mosquito.html. WSUV Professor publishes book on Mexican women
Luz María Gordillo Luz María Gordillo, Ph.D., assistant professor of women's studies at Washington State University Vancouver, has published a book on immigration and transnational communities through the University of Texas Press. Mexican Women and the Other Side of Immigration: Engendering Transnational Ties weaves personal narratives with history and an analysis of gender roles of Mexicans in the Midwest. The
book traces the development of a unique community created as
Mexican immigrants moved from the small western town of San
Ignacio Cerro Gordo, Jalisco to Detroit, Michigan. Gordillo
focuses on the concept of transnational and working-class
experiences as Mexican immigrants recreated and adjusted to
their changing environments in Detroit. Originally from Mexico City, Gordillo worked as a full-time professional photographer for several years in New York City while attending graduate school. Her doctoral work at Michigan State University focused on immigration and transnational gender studies. Gordillo lived in Detroit and San Ignacio for several months in order to conduct interviews, get archival data and take the documentary photographs that appear in the book and illustrate its cover. Gordillo is currently working on her second book. Want to know more?
