Free Living History programs at Fort Vancouver this weekend

The 160th anniversary of the establishment of the U.S. Army post known today as Vancouver Barracks will be commemorated through several living history events this weekend at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Vancouver.

On Saturday, July 17, and Sunday, July 18, Fort Vancouver National Site will be hosting the annual Soldiers' Bivouac special event. The event, an encampment of living history reenactors portraying different soldiers and units from the site's 160 years of Army history, helps interpret the camp and community lives of the soldiers stationed at Vancouver Barracks and the Army's broader role in the region. Reenactors will host open camps throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, and several scheduled programs will also be available to the public.

Also on Saturday, July 17, Fort Vancouver National Site will be hosting the annual 1860s Vintage Base Ball Match on the Parade Ground at 6 p.m. The game will be played by the rules of the 1860s, with wooden bats and without gloves. Prior to the game, the Whiskey Flats Band will play period music and reenactors will invite children to play period kids' games. The Grant House Restaurant will be offering Vintage Baseball picnic baskets.

All activities on the parade ground (Soldiers' Bivouac and the Vintage Base Ball Match) are free, but normal admission is charged upon entrance into the Fort. The cost to enter the Fort is $3 per adult or $5 per family. National Park annual, access, and golden age passes are accepted.

For a full schedule, visit www.nps.gov/fova or call the Visitor Center at 360-816-6230.

Project Sponsors Council to discuss recommendations

On Friday, July 16, the Columbia River Crossing Project Sponsors Council will review and discuss a comprehensive package of draft recommendations resulting from a four-month collaborative process to address questions raised by Council members.

The work session will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Southwest Region office of the Washington State Department of Transportation, 11018 NE 51st Circle, in Vancouver. It is open to the public. Meeting materials are available at http://www.columbiarivercrossing.org/ProjectPartners/PSCMeetingMaterials.aspx.

The Council is expected to meet again in August prior to submitting its findings and recommendations to Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire and Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski.

The Project Sponsors Council is composed of representatives from the Oregon and Washington departments of transportation, cities of Portland and Vancouver, Metro, Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council, TriMet, and C-TRAN, as well as two citizens who serve as co-chairs for the group.

CRC is a long-term, comprehensive project to reduce congestion, enhance mobility and improve safety on I-5 between SR 500 in Vancouver and Columbia Boulevard in Portland. The project will replace the I-5 Bridge, extend light rail to Vancouver, improve closely-spaced interchanges, and enhance the pedestrian and bicycle path between the two cities. The project would be funded by federal and state sources, as well as tolls. Written comments may be submitted on the CRC project at any time at feedback@columbiarivercrossing.org. More information may be found on the CRC project Web site: http://www.columbiarivercrossing.org.
