Student creates west Vancouver street mural for senior project
Photo courtesy City of Vancouver. Hudson's Bay High School senior Abby Brown teamed up with visual arts students at the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, the Shumway Neighborhood Association and the City of Vancouver to create a new "social space" for the neighborhood at F Street and East 31st Street, just east of the arts school. Brown's friend Emmy Cammack was the mural designer. The city chipped in $535 for paint, stencils and supplies and an estimated $800 in labor was provided by neighbors. The neighborhood association has agreed to maintain the mural in the future. Judi Bailey, the city's neighborhoods program manager, said in an e-mail that the city and neighborhood also hope the project will slow down traffic in the area. Nonprofit apartment community reopens in Washougal The former Bethea Park Estates, a 32-unit affordable housing complex in Washougal, will re-open Wednesday, June 30, with a new name: Gateway Garden Apartments. The apartments, originally built in 1981, are located at 4300 Addy St., on the eastern edge of Washougal along Highway 14. They consist of one-, two- and three-bedroom units surrounding a courtyard lined with beautiful mature trees. The renovation included a nearly 100 percent remodeling job inside and out. Units were gutted, and new energy efficient appliances, heaters, plumbing fixtures and lighting were installed. All the flooring and the cabinets were replaced. New energy efficient windows with detailed attention to flashing were installed. All buildings were re-sided over an innovative rain screen system to allow rain and moisture to escape. A new community room was added with a community kitchen, computers, and a gathering space. New landscaping opened up a grassy courtyard, created a new plaza, a children’s play area and community gardens with a rain-barrel water harvesting system. Three units were upgraded to current ADA standards to better serve residents with disabilities. Speakers at Wednesday's 3 p.m. event will include Washougal Mayor Sean Guard and County Commissioner Steve Stuart. Next up for ACE is the start of construction of McCallister Village in the Fruit Valley Neighborhood. This $9.5 million affordable housing project will start construction in July. Want to know more?
