Mount St. Helens Institute plans summer activities

The Mount St. Helens Institute is offering summer activities as part of the yearlong 30th anniversary of the volcano’s eruption.

Since 2000, the field seminars have helped educate hundreds of people about Mount St. Helens. Participants have explored the Pumice Plain, hiked to the volcano’s summit, and learned about the history of the eruption and how it changed the land. Seminars are open to all ages. Youths under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. The schedule includes “Mount St. Helens’ Elk” on Saturday, July 31, and “Geology of the Blast Zone” on Saturday, Aug. 7. For a full schedule and to register, visit http://www.active.com/outdoors/mount-st-helens-wa/mount-st-helens-institute-field-seminars-and-guided-climbs-2010.

A 10-mile day hike is planned on Saturday, Aug. 14, the cost is $75. For more information, visit http://mshinstitute.org/index.php/programs/information_and_policies.

The Volcano After Dark program offers youth groups the chance to spend the night in the shadow of Mount St. Helens. It is available May through October on request and costs $45 per youth. For more information, call 360-891-5069.

Lane restrictions resume on I-205 bridge this weekend

Two left lanes on northbound Interstate 205 (Glenn Jackson) Bridge will
close this weekend as work continues to replace bridge joints.
Starting at 7:30 p.m. tonight, the contractor will close one northbound lane. The two-lane closure starts at 10 p.m. and ends at 5 a.m. Monday, June 28. The right two lanes will remain open.

ODOT is expecting increased bridge lifts on the Interstate 5 bridge for river traffic due to the high river levels in the Columbia River. Motorists using the bridge to travel between Oregon and Washington should expect congestion and delays this weekend.

Travel information is available at www.tripcheck.com or by calling 511 for the latest traffic conditions.

Construction work is suspended, and all four lanes of the northbound Glenn Jackson Bridge will be open for the holiday weekend, July 2-5. Nighttime two-lane closures on the northbound Glenn Jackson Bridge will
resume Tuesday, July 6.
