Women’s Rights exhibit opens Thursday

Clark County Historical Museum will open a new exhibit, Road to Equality: The Struggle for Women’s Rights in the Northwest, on Thursday, June 24, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.  This new exhibit commemorates the centennial of Washington State women gaining the right to vote in 1910.  Reception attendees will have the opportunity to make their own political buttons and vote on the Equal Rights Amendment while mingling with some of Vancouver’s legendary ladies as played by the Vancouver Heritage Ambassadors. Light refreshments will be served.

CCHM is located in Vancouver’s 1909 Carnegie Library building. Regular museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is charged. The museum also is open free from 5 to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of each month February through November for First Thursday Museum After Hours. A wheelchair-accessible entrance to the museum is located on the east side of the museum building on 16th street.

Legacy Salmon Creek Celebrates Fifth Annual Kids Fair

Tammy Jones, an R.N. at Legacy Salmon Creek, center, helps children “operate” on Suzi Surgi-Duck, one of the more popular activities at the recent Healthy Kids Fair. Helping Tammy is her son, at left, Matt Jones.

On June 12, more than 1,500 children, parents and grandparents attended the fifth annual Healthy Kids Fair this month at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center. Children’s services departments from throughout the hospital took part, along with 20 community partners.

The Salmon Creek Lions Club painted 1,000 children’s faces; Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation handed out a free book to each child; the Children’s Center, which provides pediatric rehabilitation services, offered a children’s obstacle course focused on movement and balance; Fire District 6 offered fire safety tips. Clark Public Utilities offered electrical safety tips; the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington brought its Dental Van, offering information on oral health; Clark County YMCA offered a soccer kick-out; Kids Club Fun & Fitness offered swim-safety tips; Salmon Creek Burgerville offered games and snacks; the Clark County Sheriff’s Office offered gun safety locks; and AMR and Metro West offered ambulance tours.

"It was a busy day, with a steady stream of visitors, and we saw a lot of smiles all day long, from children and adults alike," said Brian Willoughby, community relations specialist for Legacy Salmon Creek.

The fair also offered low-cost bicycle helmets, with fittings to make sure helmets are the right size and are worn correctly. More than 500 helmets were sold at the fair. In addition, more than 80 child safety seats that were damaged or had expired were brought in to be recycled, and more than 30 child-safety seats were checked to make sure they were being used properly.
