Vancouver wins $10,000 for Fourth of July

Bring Back the 4th Contest

This morning, Liberty Mutual announced that Vancouver was one of 10 cities nationwide to win a $10,000 grant in the company’s “Bring Back the 4th™” contest encouraging people across America to rally together to help continue their cities’ and towns’ official Fourth of July celebrations. Liberty Mutual will present the money to the city of Vancouver, which, in turn, will transfer the funds to The Fort Vancouver National Trust, the nonprofit organization that produces and funds Independence Day at Fort Vancouver.

The Trust cancelled the 2009 event, a 46-year-year tradition, when funding fell short. The Trust retooled the event and found a sponsor, Bank of America, in order to bring a new July 4th event to the Vancouver community in 2010.

The Fort Vancouver National Trust heard about this grant opportunity on June 7, with only 10 days to go before the entry deadline. Kim Hash, director of programs at the Fort Vancouver National Trust and the chief choreographer of Independence Day at Fort Vancouver, received an email link to the contest from local businesswoman Kathy Jones of Fournier Group. Via a press release, email blasts, social media, and old-fashioned word-of-mouth communication, the Trust and its friends encouraged people to take the online quiz “Responsible Moments in U.S. History” to help fund the July 4th event. The communities with the largest number of quiz participants received a $10,000 grant.

Vancouver was named a winner in the large town category, along with Springfield, Illinois and Cincinnati, Ohio. Winners in the small town category are: Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Springfield, Georgia; Belmond, Iowa and Winslow, Maine. Winners in the medium town category are: Wilmington, Massachusetts; Montclair, New Jersey; and Bowling Green, Ohio.

For information, to purchase event tickets or to donate tickets to families in need, visit www.FortVan.org or call 360-992-1800.

Clark College names May's Athletes of the Month

Student athletes competing in softball and track and field have been honored as the May 2010 "Athletes of the Month" at Clark College.

Lacey Franklin

Lacey Franklin and Justin Hansen earned praise from coaches for their leadership on and off the field.  A graduate of Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs, Calif., sophomore Franklin is described as a stalwart for the Penguin softball team.  Playing mostly as a catcher, she has maintained a .968 fielding percentage, which led the team this season. During the past month, she had an eight-game hitting streak, raising her batting average from .302 to .337. Franklin has also maintained a 3.56 grade point average.

Justin Hansen

Freshman Justin Hansen came to Clark College from Columbia River High School in Vancouver. Head track and field coach Amber Moore describes Hansen as "a hardworking, dedicated student athlete on and off the field."  Hansen completed his season with a win at a meet in Spokane where he completed in the triple jump with a jump of 46 feet 10¼ inches, besting his high school record by three feet.

The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark's student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.

Each honoree receives a jacket with his or her name engraved on it. The jackets are provided by Les Schwab through its support of the Student of the Month program, in partnership with Clark’s Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.
