 Herrera files for congressional run

Jaime Herrera

On Wednesday, Jaime Herrera officially filed to run for Southwest Washington’s open 3rd Congressional District seat to replace retiring Congressman Brian Baird.

Herrera, a Republican state representative, has been running on a platform of controlling federal spending and restoring jobs to Southwest Washington. Her filing comes a week after her official campaign kickoff where nearly 400 supporters packed a Vancouver hotel room in support of Jaime’s campaign.

"This is not a typical year, and I am not a typical candidate. Our economy is suffering today and our future is at risk because of overspending," Herrera said Wednesday following her filing.  "I’m ready to go to D.C. and break the federal government’s addiction to spending.  Our national debt is now over $13 trillion, and yet our government keeps pulling out the credit card.  That’s putting our future at risk. Just as I’ve done as a state legislator, I’m going to stand up and fight against reckless spending and promote the growth of permanent, private sector jobs.  It’s time for my generation to say ‘enough is enough’ and step forward to do something about the mistakes being made in the ‘other’ Washington.  In Congress, I’ll never hesitate to put Southwest Washington’s priorities first.  Right now, the number one priority is jobs, and I’m ready to get folks back to work."

Golf tournament raises $50,000+ for Free Clinic

The 6th annual Free Clinic Classic, a golf tournament  hosted at Royal Oaks Country Club on June 4, raised $53,675 for the Free Clinic for Southwest Washington. The event drew 129 participants.

"We are, without a doubt, grateful for all those that supported this year's golf tournament," says Executive Director Barbe West"During this recession it is so important that we continue to support our neighbors that are in great need of health care services. Our clinic prevents unnecessary emergency room visits, keeps people from missing work, and keeps children healthy and able to stay in school.”

Big Al’s and Tully’s Coffee were the presenting sponsors. Other sponsors included Southwest Washington Medical Center, Physicians Insurance, Dr. Stan and Colleen Freidberg, The Vancouver Clinic, Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, Cost Less Auto Parts, Clark County Medical Society and Optometric Physicians of Washington.

Started more than 20 years ago, the clinic provides free, basic, walk-in health care, together with dental, vision and specialty care. It is now the largest free clinic in the state.
