Battle Ground Police earns WASPC accreditation

On Monday evening, June 7, The Battle Ground city council honored the city’s police department for recently earning accreditation from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC).

The department officially received the accreditation on May 19 after a year-long process.  WASPC accreditation is granted to law enforcement agencies that demonstrate 140 professional standards for efficient and effective operations.  Only about 14 percent of law enforcement agencies in Washington State have earned accreditation.

To maintain WASPC accreditation status, the department must renew its accreditation and be recertified by WASPC every four years.

"The efforts of the Battle Ground Police Department and the accreditation process has improved administrative and operational efficiencies, decreases the City's susceptibility to litigation, and has established a constant point of reference from which the Police Department operates," said City Manager John Williams. "Their work is to be commended."

For more information about the Battle Ground Police Department, visit the City's website at www.cityofbg.org.

Port of Woodland director named to two Cowlitz boards

Nelson Holmberg

A little more than a month into his new position as executive director of the Port of Woodland, Nelson Holmberg has been named to both the Board of Directors for the Cowlitz Economic Development Council (CEDC), and the Cowlitz -Wahkiakum Council of Governments (CWCOG).

"We’re very happy with Nelson’s level of involvement," said Port of Woodland Commission President Paul Cline. "Nelson is a strong leader with a knack for solid and consistent communication, and he’ll play an important role on these boards. He’ll represent an important voice of leadership for Woodland, the county and the port."

The Port of Woodland is in the midst of celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2010. The port specializes in industrial development, owning three light industrial parks in Woodland’s light industrial area, with tenants that specialize in everything from fishing lures and marine resources to custom steel fabricating and construction. The Port of Woodland owns industrial properties that have easy, direct access to Interstate 5.

Fort in running for $10,000 grant for Fourth of July

Monday, June 14, is the deadline for entries in the “Bring Back the 4th” online quiz competition to win a $10,000 grant for Independence Day at Fort Vancouver presented by Bank of America.

Participants take a short online history quiz and help win a $10,000 grant for Independence Day at Fort Vancouver. Liberty Mutual is hosting a contest allowing towns across America to compete for $10,000 Bring Back the 4th grants. Ten total grants will be divided between small, medium and large towns.

Each completed quiz counts as one credit toward a visitor's town. Credits are earned by quiz completion alone, not by quiz score. The quiz consists of eight multiple-choice questions that can be answered in a few minutes. A direct link is at www.FortVan.org.

The Fort Vancouver National Trust, the nonprofit organization that produces and funds the July 4th fireworks celebration at Fort Vancouver, cancelled the 2009 event—a 46-year-year tradition—when the funding fell short. The Trust has retooled the event and found a sponsor, Bank of America, in order to bring a new July 4th event to Vancouver. The Trust also has formed community partnerships and applied for a grant for the event’s new Heritage stage.

To participate, visit www.bringbackthe4th.com. Take the online quiz “Responsible Moments in U.S. History” and then enter contact information including town and zip code so that Liberty Mutual knows which region to credit.
