Friends of Hospice donates $50,000 to Hospice Southwest

Friends of Hospice President Dee Memering presents a $50,000 check to Southwest Foundation Executive Director Jean Rahn and Hospice Director Marc Berg, along with other hospice supporters.

Friends of Hospice recently presented the Southwest Foundation with a $50,000 donation to benefit Hospice Southwest and the Ray Hickey Hospice House. Friends of Hospice Southwest Washington, a non-profit volunteer organization, has worked for more than 20 years, raising more than $500,000 to support hospice patients and their families. With the help of many volunteers and donors, Friends of Hospice continues its fundraising efforts. These funds support the work at Hospice Southwest and the Ray Hickey Hospice House, where patients and families benefit from the best of medical and compassionate care for the terminally ill. The hospice teams are dedicated to easing the fear, anxieties and discomforts of patients and families suffering through the advanced stages of illness. Hospice Southwest also offers a full array of bereavement programs for children and adults alike through the Stepping Stones Grief and Bereavement Center at Southwest's Memorial Health Center.

Friends of Hospice hosts a variety of annual fundraising activities that include the Fall Luncheon and Holiday Poinsettia Sale. General meetings are the third Monday of each month at noon in the Fir Willow Conference Room at Southwest's Memorial Health Center, 100 E. 33rd St., Suite 201, Vancouver, WA. The organization can be reached at 360-696-5056 or online at

MacKay & Sposito receives honorable mention at Corporations for Communities award ceremony.

Lisa Schauer of MacKay & Sposito with Secretary of State Sam Reed

On May 19 MacKay & Sposito, Inc., received honorable mention at the Corporations for Communities award ceremony at Washington Secretary Sam Reed’s office in Olympia, Washington.

The Corporations for Communities program was launched in 2009 by Reed as a recognition program within the state’s Corporations & Charities Division.

Twice a year, Reed selects one small and one large corporation from Washington to recognize.  The certificate recognizes MacKay & Sposito’s contribution to the local community and service to the people of Washington State. Businesses must have a commitment to corporate giving, a drive to improve local and regional social conditions or a culture of giving within their organizations.

Testimonies from local community members were included in the award submittal by Renee Nutter, Nutter Foundation; Gary Bock, Vancouver Watersheds Council; and Kathy Scott, Leadership Clark County.

"MacKay & Sposito have placed their stamp on almost all of the significant philanthropic community outreaches.  Members of their team serve on numerous boards and committees, tirelessly networking to ensure a brighter future for the communities where they live and work," Nutter said.

Founded in 1974, M&S offers full service civil engineering, land and construction surveying, land-use planning, landscape architecture and construction management services with offices located in Vancouver, WA, Kennewick, WA, Wilsonville, OR, Bend, OR, and Salt Lake, UT. The firm employs over 65 employees companywide. For more information, call Stephanie Hadley at 360-823-1322.

Community refills the "zoo" at Legacy Children's Center

Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation trustees and “Refill the Zoo” community partners were on hand to deliver more than 2,000 stuffed animals to Legacy Children’s Center. Trustees and donors pictured here are, from left: Verdella Whareham, Dennis Rugg, Jennifer Konopasek, Jeff Stay, Karen Sahlstrom and Brad Carlson.

On May 28, Lisa Lyons, manager of the Legacy Salmon Creek Pediatric Rehabilitation Children’s Center, was down to four toys in the giveaway box for young patients. The toys are used to mark birthdays, special anniversaries and therapeutic milestones.

That same day, business representatives and Salmon Creek Foundation trustees delivered more than 2,000 stuffed animals to the center, leaving the toy box full to overflowing. In addition to the pediatric rehab clients, stuffed animals are given to children during hospital stays at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center.

Two lead businesses, Riverview Community Bank and American Underwriters Insurance, were aided by six other businesses in collecting the animals as part of the “Refill the Zoo” project: Ridgefield Junction, Lava Java, Salmon Creek Postal Annex, Salmon Creek Cleaners, Punky Doodlebugs and Mugs Coffee.

"The stuffed animals are like icing on a cake," said Shawna Burkholder, development officer for Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation. "The children love them, and we love to use them to enhance patient care."

Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation supports patient care in a number of ways, including accepting donations for much-needed equipment. That list includes therapeutic listening equipment, language-stimulation therapeutic materials for autism and other disorders, and an array of therapeutic games, books and devices. To help, contact Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation at 360-487-3457.
