Early childhood expert to kick off SELF conference

Robin Karr-Morse

Robin Karr-Morse, a nationally-recognized early childhood expert, will be the keynote speaker for Support for Early Learning & Families’ conference titled "Through the Eyes of a Child."

The two-conference is planned on Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5, at the Hilton Vancouver Washington.

"Early learning starts a lot earlier than most people realize," says Debbie Ham, executive director of SELF (Support for Early Learning & Families).  "We have clear evidence that learning begins in the womb and that birth to age three is a critical time for the social and emotional learning that forms the foundation of a successful life. This fact has broad implications for our children, their families, our community and our future, and is something we should all think about."

Karr-Morse is an author, family therapist and early learning advocate. She has worked with county, state and national officials to create social policies which support families in monitoring children’s earliest development to prevent delinquency and school failure.

"What happens in the earliest weeks, months and years of life affects us for the rest of our lives," says Karr-Morse.  "We have to shift our focus from fixing broken kids to building healthy ones."

Established in 2001, SELF is a network of SW Washington community members working together to serve children's needs. SELF’s 23 partner organizations include educators, health and mental health agencies, preschool and child care programs and professionals. To learn more, visit www.selfwa.org.

First Independent shreds eight tons of paper

On Saturday, May 22, the team at First Independent Bank’s Orchards branch hosted the fourth and final paper shredding event for the year. The community was invited to bring in documents that were bound for the garbage. Shredding those is a measure against identity theft.

In the past two years, the average shred event brought in about 7,500 pounds of paper, but this time, the total was doubled. Eight tons of paper were collected and shredded at the free event.  Used computer equipment was also collected at the event, three trailer loads worth.

The event was coordinated by: Matt Ableidinger, Amanda Collar, Melissa Geist, Kerri Kerns, Diane May, Vanessa Meza, Shantay Mills, Amy Northington, Joni Smith, and Yana Zhukova. Cintas and Technology Conservation Group donated their services.
