National Park Service director flying in from Gulf oil spill to deliver Marshall Lecture Thursday

Jon Jarvis

National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis is scheduled to fly in from the oil spill Incident Command Center in the Gulf of Mexico today in order to deliver the General George C. Marshall Lecture in Vancouver Thursday morning.

At 10:45 a.m., prior to the lecture, Jarvis will hold a press conference in the career center at Hudson’s Bay High School, 1601 E. McLoughlin Blvd., Vancouver. The lecture will follow in the school gym at 11:30 a.m.

As Incident Commander at the Mobile, Alabama, Incident Command Center, Jarvis represents the Department of the Interior (DOI), which includes the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Jarvis is working along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency as a part of the Unified Command that is responding to the recent explosion of the oil rig Deepwater Horizon and the resulting oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Jarvis’s lecture will include information about Marshall’s oversight of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a Depression-era public work relief program that combined conservation, renewal, awareness and appreciation of the nation’s natural resources.

The Marshall Lecture is a ticketed event, but tickets are free.  Online tickets are available until 3 p.m. today at www.FortVan.org.  After that, free tickets will be available at the door.

Public parking for the lecture is in the two southern parking lots reached via Mill Plain. Public entrances for this event are on the northeast and northwest corners of the gym.
