National Park Service director flying in from Gulf oil spill to deliver Marshall Lecture Thursday
Jon Jarvis National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis is scheduled to fly in from the oil spill Incident Command Center in the Gulf of Mexico today in order to deliver the General George C. Marshall Lecture in Vancouver Thursday morning. At 10:45 a.m., prior to the lecture, Jarvis will hold a press conference in the career center at Hudson’s Bay High School, 1601 E. McLoughlin Blvd., Vancouver. The lecture will follow in the school gym at 11:30 a.m. As Incident Commander at the Mobile, Alabama, Incident Command Center, Jarvis represents the Department of the Interior (DOI), which includes the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Jarvis is working along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency as a part of the Unified Command that is responding to the recent explosion of the oil rig Deepwater Horizon and the resulting oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Jarvis’s lecture will include information about Marshall’s oversight of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a Depression-era public work relief program that combined conservation, renewal, awareness and appreciation of the nation’s natural resources. The Marshall Lecture is a ticketed event, but tickets are free. Online tickets are available until 3 p.m. today at www.FortVan.org. After that, free tickets will be available at the door. Public parking for the lecture is in the two southern parking lots reached via Mill Plain. Public entrances for this event are on the northeast and northwest corners of the gym. School of Piano Technology for the Blind Receives $13,000 Community Foundation Grant

Capeloto The School of Piano Technology for the Blind, also known as the Piano Hospital, has received a $13,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Southwest Washington to support its student tool improvement project. The money will be used to purchase tool sets that students take with them after they graduate. The Community Foundation has provided over $50,000 to support projects at the Piano Hospital. The School of Piano Technology for the Blind is a private, nonprofit, accredited vocational school providing specialized training in piano technology to blind and visually impaired individuals. The school, the only one of its kind in the world, has attracted students from 36 states and 14 countries to Vancouver for its program of empowerment and self-sufficiency. The Community Foundation helps a broad cross section of citizens build stronger communities through effective philanthropy. In total, the Community Foundation has infused more than $87 million into the community since it was established in 1984. "Tip the Principal" night Thursday benefits Hough
Sean McMillan Vancouver Pizza, at 2219 Main Street in the Uptown Village neighborhood, is hosting the fourth annual “Tip the Principal” night to benefit Hough Elementary School. Principals Sean McMillan and Eva Unger will be on hand to toss pizza from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 20. The restaurant will donate all of the tips earned by McMillan and Unger as well as 25 percent of food sales to the school. Take out and delivery orders are included as long as Hough is mentioned while ordering. Pancake Breakfast to benefit Jensen family
Luke Jensen An all-you-can-eat breakfast, scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 5, at Fire Station 31 in Hockinson, will benefit the family of 9-year-old Luke Jensen. Jensen, the grandson of Chaplain Mike White, died of cancer on May 6. Individual tickets are $5 or $15 for a family. The event will kick off Saturday activities during Hockinson Fun Days. The breakfast is followed by a parade at noon and a carnival at Hockinson Middle School at 1 p.m. For more

Jim Jacks (D-Vancouver) is kicking off his re-election campaign on Wednesday, May 26, at 5:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Firefighters' Local 452 Union Hall at 2807 Fruit Valley Road. A $35 donation is suggested, but all donations are welcome. Jacks is running to retain his position representing the 49th district in the Washington Legislature.
