Community Foundation Luncheon draws record crowd

Nearly 700 people attended the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington’s Annual Luncheon Wednesday, May 12, doubling attendance in three years with a 25 percent increase over last year’s 25th Anniversary commemorative event.

"We live in a place of tremendous generosity and, over the years, have experienced growth in philanthropy and the resulting positive growth in our community," said David Nierenberg, board chair, who highlighted the event theme, Grow Philanthropy. Grow Community, throughout his remarks. "One doesn’t have to look far to see the civic projects that have been built or engage in conversations for too long before hearing about lives bettered through the collective giving of our fellow citizens."

The 10th anniversary of the Vancouver Women’s Foundation was recognized during the event. The fund provides grants to help empower women who are overcoming obstacles. Nearly 50 members each contribute $2,010 annually to fund the grants.

Also, the first Youth Philanthropy Program grant awards were presented as determined by a group of local high school students.

Event highlights also included recognition of Vernon F. Peterson as 2010 Friend of the Foundation and Joe and Teresa Pauletto as 2010 Philanthropists of the Year.

The Community Foundation helps a broad cross section of citizens build stronger communities through effective philanthropy. One of the nation’s 700 community foundations, it is a tax-exempt, public charity that primarily serves southwest Washington.

In total, the Community Foundation has infused more than $90 million into the community since it was established in 1984.

Schmidt joins International Air & Hospitality Academy

Lisa Ashby Schmidt

Arch Miller has named Lisa Ashby Schmidt, principal of Marketing Matters in Ridgefield, WA, as the International Air & Hospitality Academy’s national director of career development & placement.

Schmidt’s responsibilities will include building relationships with employers hiring students from all four of the Academy’s major programs and overall career development programs. The Academy operates Northwest Renewable Energy Institute and Northwest Culinary Institute, as well as programs in hospitality management, airline travel, and airport services.

Schmidt developed corporate marketing programs for the Nutter Corporation of Vancouver, Washington, for 5 years prior to incorporating Marketing Matters. While there, she built a clientele which included Glumac Engineering, NTEK Corporation, the Humane Society of Southwest Washington, Sound Publishing and the Building Industry Association.

"My job will be to build a pipeline for Academy students directly into U.S. industry outlets we serve," Schmidt said when the announcement was made this week. "With more than 25 years creating and executing successful marketing, development and communications projects, I believe I can bring the necessary leadership and strategic insight to this role at the Academy."

Columbia Credit Union honored for dictionary distribution

The Rotary Clubs of Clark County honored Columbia Credit Union on May 12 for its local sponsorship of The Dictionary Project. More than 10,000 dictionaries have been distributed to Clark County third-graders with the support of a $19,000 gift from the Credit Union and the work of its staff members.

"All Rotarians in Clark County appreciate the generosity of the Columbia Credit Union in the support of this Rotary Gift of Words project," Rotary District 5100 Assistant Governor Dennis Short said during the ceremony, which was held at Harry S. Truman Elementary School.

During the ceremony, Short presented Steve Kenny, CEO of Columbia Credit Union, with artwork that was created by Hudson’s Bay High School student Andre Washington in honor of the credit union.

"Reading is an important life skill that sets a foundation of independent thinking and learning in tomorrow's leaders," Kenny said. "Columbia Credit Union is proud to support the Dictionary Project and promote education in our community."

Rotary Clubs in Clark County, with the underwriting support of Columbia Credit Union, support The Dictionary Project with distribution of dictionaries to local third-graders. The Dictionary Project, a national nonprofit organization, has set a goal of sending dictionaries to every elementary school in the United States. More information about the Dictionary Project is available at www.dictionaryproject.org.
