Lore of Lewis and Clark topic of May 21 lecture
David Nicandri David Nicandri, author and executive director of the Washington State Historical Society, will discuss his book River of Promise: Lewis and Clark on the Columbia during the first stop in Southwest Washington on his book tour. The event is at 7 p.m., Friday, May 21, at the Red Cross Building, 605 Barnes Street, at the Fort Vancouver National Site. It is free and open to the public.
VSO plans benefit concert
A concert to benefit the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Oregon Adventist Men’s Chorus is planned for 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, at the Seventh-day Adventist Community Church, 9711 NE St. Johns Road, Vancouver. Compositions by Arthur Foote, Felix Mendelssohn, and Johannes Brahms will be performed by the orchestra and chorus. A suggested donation of $15 will be requested. Kids help kids at Dozer Days this weekend
The 6th Annual Dozer Day is this weekend, Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16, expanding to two days for the first time. Children get to drive bulldozers, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment with a professional operator at their side. Minutes off of State Route 14, the event will be held at the corner of 192nd Avenue and Brady Road in Vancouver, Washington, directly adjacent to the 192nd Avenue exit. All proceeds from the event benefit local children’s charities throughout Clark County. Admission is $5 for seniors and children (ages 2-12), $7 for adults and free for those less than two years old. Tickets on the day of the event are $8 for kids and seniors (60 and over) and $10 for adults. Once admission is paid, the costs of most activities inside the event are free, including equipment rides, but cash is needed for food, water and souvenirs and there is no ATM on site. Florence Nightingale's legacy subject of Clark College celebration of nursing
Dr. Ginny Guido Dr. Ginny Guido, Regional Director and Assistant Dean of Nursing at Washington State University Vancouver, will present "Nursing and Ethics: A Legacy from Florence Nightingale," during the Hilma Speights Distinguished Lecture and Nursing Celebration from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 12 hosted by the Clark College Nursing Department in collaboration with the WSU Vancouver College of Nursing. The lecture will be held in Room 120 of Clark College at WSU Vancouver, 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave., Vancouver. Parking at the WSU Vancouver campus is free after 7 p.m. The lecture is also free and open to the public. The annual lecture and celebration was established in honor of Hilma Speights, who provided an estate gift of $4.1 million to Clark College for nursing education. The lecture is held during National Nurses Week. This year, the event coincides with International Nurses Day, which is held on the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. Born in 1820, Nightingale became known during the Crimean War for her pioneering work in nursing.
