BG Student Art Show opens May 7

Student artwork on display

The annual Battle Ground School District Student Art Show, which dates to the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower, will formally open at 3:45 p.m. Friday, May 7. The exhibit is at Captain Strong Primary School, 1002 N.W. Sixth Ave., just north of downtown Battle Ground.

Friday’s event will be in conjunction with a meeting of the Battle Ground School Board. That meeting will include announcement of the art show winners and a reception for the young artists and their families as well as the general public. There is no admission charge Friday or any time during the month-long exhibit.

In all, 926 pieces of art by students of all grade levels and all schools in the district will be displayed at Captain Strong Primary for the entire show, through Friday, May 28. While the public is welcome at Friday’s formal opening, eager art fans need not wait. Visitors during school hours are asked to first check in at the school office.

The Battle Ground Student Art Show started in 1959, eight years after Battle Ground was incorporated. The city’s head librarian, Frances Rieck, and Battle Ground High School’s art teacher, Bob Peck, took the lead in soliciting and displaying students’ art work at the city library, which then was adjacent to the high school campus. In later years, Anna Cross, who worked in the high school library, became another key organizer of the annual event. Peck and Cross remain active in organizing the show.

Mount St. Helens event planned tomorrow

A public remembrance of the eruption of Mount St. Helens is planned tomorrow, Tuesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. at the Lucky Labrador Beer Hall, 1945 NW Quimby in Portland, Oregon.  Tickets are $5 and available at the door.  Food and beverages are available separately for purchase.  Doors open at 5 p.m., and the evening remembrance will begin at 7 p.m.  All ages are welcome. Space is limited so arrive early.

Christine Colasurdo, Darryl Lloyd and Susan Saul, all of whom have hiked through the blast zone extensively since 1980, will share vivid memories of Mount St. Helens before it erupted.  More information about this event is available at www.mshinstitute.org.

The Mount St. Helens Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people of all ages gain an understanding of the natural processes and cultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest’s volcanic landscapes. The institute promotes stewardship, science and appreciation of the Northwest. Visit the website for information on lectures, hikes, outings, work parties, and how to become a member.

First Thursday event planned at Clark County museum

The first exhibit in the newly-renovated gallery space at the Clark County Historical Museum will focus on the New Deal. Franklin D. Roosevelt helped create a Democratic tidal wave that swept across Washington and the nation in 1932 during the depths of the Great Depression.  He promised Americans a "New Deal."  After Roosevelt took office in March 1933, each day brought dramatic new developments and agencies, including the Works Progress Administration, or WPA.

In Washington, New Deal projects included the Grand Coulee Dam. Unemployed artists, laborers and researchers  were  all put back to work in their communities, leaving behind a legacy of roads, bridges, murals and parks.  Maria Pascualy, curator at the Washington State Historical Society, selected 30 photographic images from representative projects across the state and paired them with an essay by historian Carlos Schwantes. The Washington State Historical Society is a repository for the WPA Washington State photographic collection, the WPA Washington State Federal Writers Project manuscript Collection and the WPA King County Emergency Relief  Administration Photographic Collection. This exhibit is a photographic essay from the Traveling Exhibit Service of the Washington State Historical Society.

Beginning at 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, WSU Vancouver Library’s archives specialist Robert Schimelpfenig will talk about the subtle kinds of information that can be derived from historic photographs.  He will also discuss ways to document information about family photographs and the basic steps and best practices for digitally preserving photos.

The Clark County Historical Museum’s Photograph Collection consists of more than 5,300 images now available to the general public on CCHM’s website at www.cchmuseum.org.  High resolution images and reprints may be ordered from CCHM using forms available on the site.

Museum admittance is free from 5 to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of each month February – November for First Thursday Museum After Hours. A wheelchair accessible entrance to the museum is located on the east side of the building off 16th Street. The museum is located at 1511 Main St., Vancouver. For information, call, 360-993-5679.

Space still available at Connections Fair

The Nonprofit and Business Connections Fair will be from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, May 4, at the Hilton Vancouver Washington.
