Arbor Day, Earth Day events planned

The city of Vancouver will celebrate Arbor Day starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 14, at the Mayor's Grove in Marshall Community Park, 1009 E. McLoughlin.

This year's celebration theme, "Planting Trees Today for Our Children's Tomorrow," highlights the benefits of urban trees for future generations.

Featured events include a ceremonial tree planting, giveaway of free tree seedlings, children's crafts and activities, and a presentation of awards for the City of Vancouver and Clark Public Utilities' urban forest efforts.

Mayor Tim Leavitt will accept the award honoring Vancouver as Tree City USA for the 21st consecutive year and, for further commitment to promoting urban tree canopy, the prestigious Tree City USA Growth Award. Commissioner Carol Curtis will accept an award honoring Clark Public Utilities for TreeLine USA for the 11th consecutive year.

This year's event is presented by the City of Vancouver with sponsors, US Forest Service, Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Clark Public Utilities, to celebrate the legacy of urban trees.

The public is encouraged to share in this free, family-friendly event.

For more information and details about Vancouver's Arbor Month events, please visit the Vancouver Urban Forestry Web site at http://www.cityofvancouver.us/urbanforestry or contact Jessica Antoine, Urban Forestry Outreach Coordinator, at (360) 619-1108.

Twenty years after the city of Vancouver received the gift of 100 Shirofugen cherry trees, the fifth annual Sakura Festival is planned to celebrate that day as well as the sister city relationship with Joyo, Japan.

Festivities will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 under the historic trees near the music building and the O'Connell Sports center on the Clark College campus. At that time, ground will be broken to plant a Japanese garden.

Modeled after the Japanese tradition of picnicking and celebrating the arrival of spring beneath the blossoming cherry trees, the Sakura Festival recognizes the international friendship between the City of Vancouver and its sister city, Joyo, Japan.  Established in 1995, the sister-city relationship between Vancouver and Joyo is marking its 15th anniversary.

Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver. Driving directions and parking maps are available at www.clark.edu/maps.

Sponsored by the Clark College, the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Rotary, the festival is free and open to the public.

Dignitaries scheduled to attend include Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt; former Vancouver mayors Bruce Hagensen and Royce Pollard; representatives of Joyo City; Takamichi Okabe, Consul General of Japan (Portland); and Tatsuo Ito, executive vice president, SEH America, Inc.

The Clark College Women's Choral Ensemble will also perform.

After the ceremony, the festival will continue throughout the afternoon with Japanese displays, demonstrations and entertainment in the Gaiser Student Center.

“The Sakura Festival has become a great tradition for Clark College and the City of Vancouver," says Clark College President Robert K. Knight, "It’s especially meaningful this year as we recognize the 20th anniversary of the generous gift of the symbolic cherry trees and break ground for a Japanese garden-- a beautiful new gift for our region.”

Information about the Sakura Festival is available at www.clark.edu/special/sakura. For more information, contact the Clark College Office of International Programs at 360-992-2390.

Clark Public Utilities' StreamTeam is hosting EcoFair  starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 17 at Salmon Creek Park at Klineline Pond, 1112 NE 117th Street. Highlights include a Saving Salmon tour, live music and a sustainable picnic in the park. For more information, visit www.StreamTeam.net.

Clark College honor student athletes

Josh Smith

Sam Watkins

Student athletes competing in track and field and softball have been honored as the March 2010 Athletes of the Month at Clark College.

A graduate of Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Ore., Josh Smith aspires to become a physical therapist or anesthesiologist. "Josh is a dedicated athlete who transferred from Oregon State, which does not have a track program, to see what he is capable of," says track and field coach Amber Moore. "He now leads the NWAACC in both the 100 and 200 meters, and contributes to the 4x100 meter relay. Josh continues to have a positive attitude and great work ethic, which will help him get to the Division I level of competition."

Sam Watkins is a graduate of Castle Rock High School.   Head softball coach Kasey Powers describes Watkins as "a hard worker in the classroom, who is continually working to become a better, more rounded student. Sam was one of the hardest working players on the team during the off-season, and it is paying early dividends for the Penguin Softball program."

The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark's student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.

Each honoree receives a jacket with his or her name engraved on it.  The jackets are provided by Les Schwab through its support of the Student of the Month program, in partnership with Clark’s Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.

Columbia Credit Union offers Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University

Columbia Credit Union is offering Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University a program that teaches families to achieve their financial goals by eliminating debt, saving for the future and building wealth.

"In these challenging economic times, it’s important to provide our members with the financial tools they need," said  Steve Kenny, president and CEO. "As a credit union, our goal is to help members succeed financially, and now more than ever, members have been asking us for guidance. We’re pleased to offer a program that can absolutely change lives."

The program was announced through the credit union’s Web site. The first class, scheduled for Tuesday, April 13, filled in 27 minutes.

To better accommodate the demand, the credit union will hold two classes in the fall.

Over the course of 13 weeks, the FPU program at Columbia will start with a video taught by Ramsey, a personal money management expert, author and popular radio personality. After the video, Columbia staff will answer questions and facilitate small-group discussions.

At this time, the FPU program is offered only to Columbia members. Columbia is offering FPU at a reduced price of $99 per family for a lifetime membership to the course and the required materials.

After attending FPU once, a family can register as often as it wants at no additional cost to reinforce the lessons.

The credit union offers a variety of other free financial workshops open to the general public on topics including budget basics, how to build a strong credit history, identity theft, estate planning and more.
