Symphony raises $5,000 in five days
Salvador Brotons The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's "Save the Music" fundraising campaign has brought in $5,000 in five days. The campaign was launched after budget shortfalls led the organization to cancel concerts planned for April 17 and 18. The goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of April. Ticket sales pay only 20 percent of the symphony's expenses, with the rest paid by donations and corporate sponsorships. Those expenses include the salary for Maestro Salvador Brotons, rehearsal space and rental fees for the performance space at Skyview High School. The concerts planned on May 29 and 30 will feature the three student musicians selected as Young Artists on March 7. "We know that that May will be one of the joyous and enthusiastic concerts of the season. Being able to present our young artists, along with a full concert of waltzes and polkas, will end our year with a bang," says Scott Milam, executive director of the symphony. Deadline for tire removal extended to April 10
Due to the threat of more severe
winter weather forecast for the Cascade mountain range, Washington
State Department of Transportation officials today extended the
deadline to remove studded tires through April 10. Washington State
Patrol troopers enforce a $124 fine for those who use studded tires
after the deadline. No one can guarantee ice - and snow-free
roadways, so WSDOT encourages drivers, especially those heading into
the higher elevations, to plan ahead and be mindful of road
conditions. Jim Fischer
