Urban Forester Charles Ray, left, demonstrates proper tree planting technique

Following a pancake breakfast provided by Chronis Restaurant, Vancouver’s Downtown Association and forty volunteers planted another 37 trees in Downtown Vancouver on Saturday morning. Three varieties of trees were added to Eighth Street and Evergreen Boulevard.

This is the second year the VDA and the city of Vancouver have worked together to increase the number of trees in the downtown area. After Saturday's efforts, there are now 70 trees along the sidewalks of downtown.

The city of Vancouver has been designated a Tree City USA since 1989 and hopes to increase the city’s tree canopy from its current 19 percent to 28 percent.

“We know that our visitors and shoppers appreciate tree-lined streets, " said Lee Coulthard, president of the VDA, "Trees are a gracious, welcoming element and our organization thanks the City of Vancouver for working with us to bring more lush green trees to our downtown."

Vancouver's Downtown Association  is a volunteer organization with the mission of strengthening the city center as a way of improving the overall health of the City of Vancouver.  Its projects include First Friday ArtWalk, the Turtle Place public plaza on Seventh Street, the Downtown Clean Up event on May 8, and the popular flower basket program that will hang lush flower baskets throughout the city on May 1.
