Harwood chosen Doctor of the Year
Dr. Brian Harwood Pulmonologist Brian Harwood is Southwest Washington Medical Center's "Extraordinary Doctor of the Year." Today, March 29, is National Doctor's Day, providing an opportunity for the medical center to shine the spotlight on an exceptional health care provider. More than 240 nominations for the honor were received from patients and staff. Hospital employees chose Harwood from those nominees. Harwood is based at the Vancouver Clinic and also works on patient quality initiatives and hospice care. According to one of the people who nominated Harwood, “Brian is the most compassionate, caring and genuine doctor I've worked with in the 29 years I've been an RN. Patients love him, families love him and staff loves him. Brian is the best every single day of the year. No doubt about it!" The public is encouraged to spotlight their own extraordinary doctors by nominating them at www.ExpectTheExtra.org. Southwest Washington Medical Center has been in the community for 150 years with 442 beds and a full range of medical services. Southwest is also one of Clark County’s largest employers. Southwest’s 3,400 employees and 600 active medical staff members. 37 new trees planted in Downtown Vancouver

Three varieties of trees were added to Eighth Street and Evergreen Boulevard. This is the second year the VDA and the city of Vancouver have worked together to increase the number of trees in the downtown area. After Saturday's efforts, there are now 70 trees along the sidewalks of downtown. The city of Vancouver has been designated a Tree City USA since 1989 and hopes to increase the city’s tree canopy from its current 19 percent to 28 percent. “We know that our visitors and shoppers appreciate tree-lined streets, " said Lee Coulthard, president of the VDA, "Trees are a gracious, welcoming element and our organization thanks the City of Vancouver for working with us to bring more lush green trees to our downtown." Vancouver's Downtown Association is a volunteer organization with the mission of strengthening the city center as a way of improving the overall health of the City of Vancouver. Its projects include First Friday ArtWalk, the Turtle Place public plaza on Seventh Street, the Downtown Clean Up event on May 8, and the popular flower basket program that will hang lush flower baskets throughout the city on May 1. Clark County Fair Concert Series announced Country music star Miranda Lambert will perform on Friday, Aug. 6, as part of the Clark County Fair Concert Series in the Amphitheater at Clark County. Concerts will be staged in the Amphitheater during the Clark County Fair for the first time this year. Boys Like Girls, an alternative pop rock band from Boston, will perform on Monday, Aug. 9, at the Amphitheater. News Briefs Seattle novelist Erica Bauermeister will discuss and sign her book The School of Essential Ingredients at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Monday, March 29, at the Vancouver Community Library, 1007 E. Mill Plain Blvd. The book centers on eight students taking a monthly cooking class and the class instructor. <> The Nutter Foundation is accepting community grant applications. The foundation supports nonprofit organizations that focus on youth development programs. In 2009, the foundation awarded more than $100,000. Applications are available online at www.nutterfoundation.org. <> The city of Vancouver is seeking applicants for a full-term position on the new Clark County Arts Commission. The 11-member commission will work to enhance and support the growth of the local economy through collaboration among patrons of the arts, artists, the business community, service groups and schools. Jonathan Jarvis, the director of the National Park Service, is the speaker. The lecture begins at 11:30 a.m. at Hudson's Bay High School, 1206 East Reserve Street in Vancouver. Tickets can be printed from the Fort Vancouver Reserve Trust's Web site at www.fortvan.org. <> State transportation officials are reminding Washington drivers that April 1 is the deadline for removing studded snow tires. The fine for driving after April 1 with studded tires is $124. The deadline is the same in Oregon. <> Construction in Truman and Fisher-Mill neighborhood parks is scheduled to start in early April. Work on the Bosco Farm park will add paved and unpaved trails, a playground and picnic tables. Improvements planned for Vandervort Park include a loop trail, playground, a basketball half court, and benches.
