Camas Educational Foundation raises $21,000 in pledges In the middle is Olivia Russell, student at Liberty Middle School. Photo taken by Carol Whitaker, CEF board member.The Camas Educational Foundation's (CEF) 9th annual Phone-a-Thon brought in $21,000 in pledges to fund innovation and curriculum enhancements across the district. These funds will be distributed to teachers, staff, community members, and students in the form of mini-and major grant awards. For three evenings from March 2 and March 4, over 100 middle and high school students phoned over 1000 households across Camas to ask for donations. CHS Key Club and Math/Science Academy students worked alongside students from Liberty and Skyridge Middle Schools. Teachers, administrators, CEF volunteers, and Camas School Board members lent a hand to supervise, organize, and feed the student volunteers. "It was very exciting to work with enthusiastic student callers and a supportive Camas community," said Marybeth Johnson, the CEF board member who led this year's effort. "It was especially encouraging to witness firsthand the value that the Camas community places on education." Community sponsors including Kohl's, Mansur Financial, Nies Insurance, Camas Produce, Georgia Pacific, Twilight Pizza, Riverview Community Bank, The Stewart Group, Safeway, and the Camas-Post Record supplied volunteers, funds, food, and materials to ensure a successful event. Project Sponsors Council meets March 12 The Columbia River Crossing Project Sponsors Council will discuss recommendations to manage traffic congestion during and after construction at its March 12 meeting. The Project Sponsors Council will hear about potential strategies to provide options for travelers in the CRC project area during construction. Alternative strategies that could be implemented include increased transit service, detours or added support for vanpool programs. Some construction-related strategies could continue long-term. The agenda also includes a report on new research conducted on the economic impact of freight to the Portland-Vancouver region, federal funding and progress on the Vancouver light-rail alignment. The meeting will be held 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Region 1 office of the Oregon Department of Transportation, 123 NW Flanders Street in Portland. It is open to the public. C-TRAN employee recognized for 35 years’ safe driving C-TRAN's Employee Recognition Day provided an annual opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and teamwork demonstrated by employees throughout the year. This year's event on Friday, March 5, included a special commendation for outstanding performance behind the wheel of a bus. As part of the day's activities, Coach Operator Allen Wiemer was recognized for 35 years of accident-free driving. Wiemer, who began his bus driving career with Vancouver Transit in 1975, has been operating C-TRAN buses in and around Clark County since C-TRAN first began rolling in 1981. "Al's remarkable driving record, demeanor and his many years of experience,” said C-TRAN Executive Director/CEO Jeff Hamm, ‘set him apart. And yet, Al Wiemer exemplifies the type of drivers that make C-TRAN great.’ News Briefs Spend an evening with our county commissioners during March, April, and May Fairground Neighborhood Association meetings. Each of the county commissioners will give insight to county goings-on, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions. The meetings are as follows: Thursday, March 11, with guest Steve Stuart, county commissioner from district 3; Thursday, April 8, with guest Marc Boldt, county commissioner from district 2; and Thursday May 13, with guest Tom Mielke, county commissioner from district 1. Attendance to all meetings are strongly encouraged.
