Clark College honors December’s student athletes of the month

Travis Garrison and Renee Tzeo.

Student athletes competing in men’s and women’s basketball have been honored as the December 2009 "Athletes of the Month" at Clark College.

Travis Garrison is a 6’5” forward on Clark’s basketball team. A graduate of Evergreen High School, Garrison is described by coach Mike Arnold as having shown “great leadership and commitment to his teammates, the program, and his own development for the past couple of years. “ Arnold says Garrison’s contributions “cannot be measured only by statistics. Often guarding the opponent’s biggest player and giving up inches and pounds, Garrison has shown to be a very strong defender.” Arnold adds that, with a 3.31 grade point average (GPA), Garrison “is a leader in the classroom as well.”

Freshman basketball player Renee Tzeo came to Clark from Reynolds High School in Troutdale. Coach Nancy Boone says that Tzeo “demonstrates a strong sense of leadership.” Boone adds that Tzeo, who has a 3.55 GPA, “has a high basketball IQ, which she gained from playing on a very strong summer league team.”

The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark's student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.

Six are honored by induction into the Clark County Hall of Fame

The Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise will be honoring the service of six area residents who have demonstrated “Service Above Self,” the Rotary’s motto, by their service in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world, by inducting them into the Clark County Hall of Fame.

The 2010 inductees are as follows: Mark Matthias, co-founder of Beaches Restaurant; Richard Melching, former superintendent of Evergreen Public Schools; Dellan and Wayne Redjou, owners of Smokey's Pizza; Linda Smith, former member of the U.S. Congress; and John Standefer, guitarist.

The induction of the Hall of Fame's 2010 class will be Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at the Heathman Lodge, 7801 Greenwood Drive, Vancouver. All recipients will be introduced with a video or photo and a biography and will address remarks to the attendees. Tickets to the event are $40 per person.

"We are proud to be recognizing these individuals," says Brady Lander, president of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise. "Each one of them has professional and civic accomplishments that reflect the commitment to serving others that is the hallmark of Rotary International.”

The Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise is a volunteer organization dedicated to serving our local and world-wide community through hands-on involvement. Fundraising efforts support activities which include scholarships, community projects, children and families. All members give of their time and resources to promote peace and goodwill both locally and around the world. The club meets 7 a.m. Fridays at the Heathman Lodge, 7801 Greenwood Drive, Vancouver. American Red Cross relief effort in Haiti

Southwest Washington Red Cross, The American Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as well as U.N. agencies and the U.S. Agency for International Development, are deploying teams to coordinate humanitarian assistance and provide search and rescue services. The American Red Cross already has seen an outpouring of support and concern from the public.

The American Red Cross is releasing $1 million for immediate response needs. It is also deploying a Relief Emergency Response Unit team and has an additional specialist en route.

Initial reports indicate a high number of casualties with widespread damage and collapsed buildings, creating an urgent need for search and rescue activities. As many as three million people may be affected.

Inquiries regarding U.S. citizens living or traveling in Haiti should refer to the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens services, at 888-407-4747 or 202-647-5225.

Also, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has a FamilyLinks website, which aims to help those who are separated by conflict or disaster, to find information about their loved ones in order to restore contact. Visit www.icrc.org/familylinks for more information.

People who want to help those affected by the Haitian earthquake can make a donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund at Redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. The Red Cross is also receiving money through a third party mobile fundraising effort sponsored by Mobile Accord. Mobile donors can text "Haiti" to 90999 to send a ten dollar donation to the Red Cross. The funds will go to support the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. (Please note this is a legitimate service whereby the donation will be billed to the phone owner’s cell statement).
