Dennis Kampe running for legislature Dennis KampeCareer educator and lifelong Clark County resident Dennis Kampe has announced his candidacy for a seat in the State House of Representatives in the 2010 election. The 18th-District Hockinson Democrat has been the director of the Clark County Skills Center for 19 years and is running to "insure the availability of a highly skilled and trained work force with a priority on recapturing lost jobs and creating new family wage jobs." A graduate of Ridgefield High School and Clark College, Kampe helped launch the Skills Center in 1983 as assistant director. As director, he has led the school to three major national honors: from BusinessWeek magazine, the Albertson’s Foundation and the National Character Education Association. He has 19 years of budget management experience with an annual current-day value of $4.5 million dollars. His community service includes four years as a Leadership Clark County Board member, five years as chair of the Washington State Skills Center Directors Association and nine years as director/teacher of the Southwest Washington Business and Industry Teacher Certification Consortium. He has also been honored as a local Red Cross "Good Samaritan Hero." In his first run for public office, Kampe is vying for Position 1 in the 18th legislative district, now held by republican Jaime Herrera. For more information, contact Kampe at 635-1920 and/or denniskampe@ live.com. Monica Stonier enters race Monica Stonier announced her candidacy for Deb Wallace’s open seat Monday night at the Evergreen Education Association Rep Council meeting and the Clark County Democrats Central Committee. With Wallace entering the race for Brian Baird’s open Congressional seat, there will be no delay in Stonier’s campaign to fill Position 2 in the 17th legislative district. She entered the race Sunday and in twenty-four hours had collected over 50 endorsements from local democrats, state party leaders, educators, families, and community activists to be listed on her campaign website next week. As a parent and concerned citizen, Stonier is committed to representing the 17th LD in Olympia: "My two kids and thousands of our students live in this community. I am not willing to let decisions about education budget cuts and policy continue to be made by people who do not have my understanding of the effects on teachers, students, and their families. Our families are facing disclosures, devastating health care cuts, job losses, and I have been teaching my students that some day they can make a difference. It’s my time to walk the walk. "Stonier is married with two children, comes from a diverse family of Hispanic and Japanese Americans, a military family, and holds a cherished value of living in service to others. Stonier is a teacher of language arts and social studies and an instructional coach at Pacific Middle School in Evergreen Public Schools. She campaigned and organized for Barack Obama and was elected as a national delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Following through with her commitment to her community, she now serves as secretary on the 17th democrats executive council, and has been an active volunteer in local democratic campaigns. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a teaching certificate from Western Washington University in 1999 and a master’s degree in education from Washington State University Vancouver in 2008. Eight Battle Ground teachers earn national certification Eight teachers from the Battle Ground School District have earned certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). The accomplishment marks successful completion of a rigorous, one-to-three-year program aimed at improving teaching techniques and styles in order to bolster students’ enthusiasm for learning. The state awards stipends of approximately $5,000 a year to NBPTS-certified teachers in Washington. The Battle Ground teachers certified this year are the following: Julie Ash from Maple Grove Primary, Tiffany Gould and Jamie Griffith from Glenwood Heights Primary, Virginia Clement from Chief Umtuch Middle, Heather Smithline and Annette Weeks from Battle Ground High, and Richard Boehm and Michael Griffith from Prairie High.
