“Hallowood" event raises $77,335 for YWCA Clark County

"Thriller" dancers from First Independent

YWCA Clark County raised $77,335 at "Hallowood," the First Annual YWCA FUNdraiser presented by First Independent. The event was held on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Hilton Vancouver, Washington. This year's featured program was the SafeChoice Domestic Violence Program, which provides shelter, advocacy, support, and education 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to more than 5,000 people each year.

"The YWCA loves to throw a great party for a great cause," said Jennifer Werdel, YWCA's director of development and communications. "And it's become something of a tradition for our corporate partner, First Independent, to perform. This year's event was a huge success and everybody had a great time."

In addition to First Independent, the Vancouver Business Journal was the “corporate media partner,” the Vancouver Clinic was the “photo booth sponsor,” Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt was the "ghost bar sponsors,” and Corwin Beverage Co. was the “exclusive beverage sponsor”. Other sponsors included Cowlitz Indian Tribe, Providence Health & Services, Terry Murphy, and Kathryn Welsh.

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra hosts sixteenth annual young artists competition

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will host its sixteenth annual Young Artists Competition, where students will compete to win $1,000 and a chance to perform with the VSO on April 17 and 18, 2010, at Skyview High School Concert Hall.

The competition is open to all students 18 years or younger. Contestants must currently be studying with a music teacher and must reside within a fifty-mile radius of Vancouver, WA. Previous first-place winners of this competition are not eligible.

The musical selection will consist of standard concerto repertoire and must be less than fifteen minutes in length.

Professional musicians in each category will select the finalists. Up to nine finalists will perform “concert style” before a panel of judges. The final competition of the top three finalists in each category will be held March 7, 2010, at the Royal Durst Theatre at the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics. Winning amounts are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place in the three categories of strings, piano and brass/woodwinds/percussion.

Deadline for submission of the entry form, $25 entry fee and audition CD is Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. All entries should be sent to VSO Orchestra Manager Douglas Peebles.

Applications and information may be obtained by contacting the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at 735-7278 or at www.vancouversymphony.org. All applicants will be notified of the preliminary judging decision during the week of February 1, 2010.
