Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce announces its 2009 Ambassador of the Year Susan RawsonThe Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce awarded Susan Rawson the 2009 Ambassador of the Year award in recognition of her dedication to the chamber. Rawson received the award at the chamber’s Annual Dinner and Installation of Officers banquet, held on Sept. 17, at the Hilton Vancouver. Rawson is a Realtor with Mountain View Properties NW in Vancouver. She has been a chamber ambassador since 2005. The award honors her commitment to the chamber by assisting at a variety of events all year. In addition, Rawson serves as the chair of the Membership Mentor committee, which pairs new chamber members with an ambassador “mentor” to help them get acquainted. The ambassadors are an integral part of the GVCC. The group, also known as the “Red Coats” for their distinctive red blazers, comprises active chamber volunteers whose responsibilities include meeting and greeting at chamber events, welcoming new members and assisting at ribbon cuttings and community events. The Ambassador program has been in existence for 20 years.
Clark College music professor wins fourth national Donald AppertFor the fourth time in his career, Clark College music professor Donald Appert has been honored with the ASCAPLUS Award, presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Appert also received ASCAP awards in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Appert, who resides in Vancouver, is currently in his twentieth season as music director/conductor of the Clark College Orchestra. He received the ASCAPLUS Award for international performances of his composition Nara Variations by the Filharmonic “Mihail Jora” Bacau (Romania), the Orchestra Sinfonica Citta di Grosseto (Italy), and the Orquestra Sinfonica de El Salvador. A regional performance of Nara Variations is planned by the Oregon Sinfonietta during their March 14, 2010, performance. Appert states, “Continued recognition from ASCAP has encouraged me to make the time to be active as a composer again. I have just finished the rough draft of my largest work to date, entitled Northwest Triptych, a three-movement piece for full orchestra.” Appert hopes that orchestras in Europe and Central America will be interested in performing the new work, expanding its audience. GVCC opposes tax initiative I-1033 The Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, along with local business and community leaders, hosted a press conference yesterday, Oct. 15, to discuss opposition to Tim Eyman's tax initiative known as I-1033. The chamber's Public Affairs Committee recommended, and the chamber's board of directors agreed, to take a position in opposition of I-1033 due to the limitations that it would place on the ability to capitalize on the upswing of an economic recovery. Panelists at the press conference included Kim Capeloto, GVCC president and CEO, along with Carrie VanZant, Seamar Community Health Centers, Jeanette Muck, Washington State PTA, Linda Lee, in-home health care provider, Mark Johnston, Vancouver Firefighters Union, and Chad Dillard, Southwest Washington Medical Center. "We absolutely encourage careful government spending and allocation of funds, but this is not the right tool. What we don't like is how this proposal is packaged." As the economy improves, Capeloto added, "We need to be able to capitalize on growth as soon as possible--we believe we need to be ready and able to act on growth opportunities as they present themselves in the future." Other panelists said nursing home programs, Medicaid, education and environmental protection programs would also be at risk if I-1033 passes.
