Dog biscuits from BGHS going to national VIPs

Pictured above is Josh Loftus, "Futures" student and principal entrepreneur (left). The book Top Dogs and Their Pets which is the picture on the right, was photographed mostly by Dallas Morning News photographer David Woo. The book is featuring people from fields such as entertainment, sports, business and politics. There is a photo of each person with his or her pet and their completion of ten sentences, such as, “My Pet’s worst habit is:” and “I wish my pet could:”

For two years, dog biscuits have been made and packaged by disabled students in Pam Golliher’s and Diane Brown’s classes held in a Battle Ground High School classroom kitchen called “The Barkery.” Distribution falls to teacher Jodie Rogers’ “Futures” program for disabled 18-to-21-year olds who market and distribute the dog biscuits to local pet-groomers, veterinarians and retailers.

Josh Loftus, a “Futures” student, is the principal entrepreneur; he has lined-up and arranged distribution to between 15 and 20 businesses at this point. One of Loftus’s customers is the Old Town Battle Grounds coffee shop on Main Street. That’s where Brad Fenison, owner of the Pediment Group publishers in Battle Ground, and his daughter, Ashley Ainley, were having coffee one day recently and spotted the little clear-plastic bags of dog biscuits for sale.

Fenison and Ainley are about to publish a hard-cover coffee-table book called Top Dogs and Their Pets. They plan on including a bag of the biscuits along with a copy of the book, which they are sending to the 91 celebrities featured in the volume, to be released Nov. 2.

While the teachers are delighted about the biscuits going to celebrities, it is the ongoing local sales that sustain the program.

“Any time we can give the students relevant work that’s real, that’s a benefit,” Golliher says. “This really matters. They put on an apron and go to work. They take it seriously and see their product move.”

According to Gollinher, what little profit there is goes to buy equipment and supplies that might not otherwise be funded.

H1N1 vaccine reaches Southwest Washington

The first shipment of H1N1 vaccine has today reached Southwest Washington. The 2,890 doses arrived at Clark County Public Health in intra-nasal form and were shared with health jurisdictions in Cowlitz, Skamania and Wahkiakum Counties.

Vaccine will first be made available to two priority groups, including healthcare workers and emergency responders who provide direct patient care, and to children in childcare or other group settings. Intra-nasal vaccine is suitable for healthy individuals between the ages of 2 and 49. It should not be given to, or taken by pregnant women.

More intra-nasal H1N1 vaccine is expected to arrive in the region next week. Injectable vaccine is expected to arrive later in the month.

More information about the response to H1N1 (swine flu) in Southwest Washington is available at www.flunewsswwashington.org.
