Michael Kissinger conducts
The Bravo! Vancouver 15th concert series concludes at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 20, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 S Andreson Road, with a tribute to Benny Goodman, “100 years of Jazz.” The concert is an all jazz program featuring the 15-piece Pacific Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bravo! Artistic director and clarinetist Michael Kissinger. The program will also feature the world-premiere of Kissinger’s Suite for Jazz Orchestra. The concert presented by Comcast and co-sponsored by the Clark County Family YMCA, commemorates the centenary of jazz legend Goodman. A pre-concert reception is at 6:30 p.m., featuring deserts and wine, with proceeds benefitting the Clark County Family YMCA and St. Joseph Church Knights of Columbus. Included is a wine auction. outstanding Sammy Awards honoring individuals, groups and projects for outstanding contributions to salmon recovery in Clark County will be presented from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 11, in the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 Columbia Way. Joining Clark County Commissioners in presenting the awards will be guest speaker Gary Loomis, president of Fish First. Gary Loomis perfected the modern-day, high–performance fishing rod and has been dubbed “the grandfather of graphite” within the angling industry. In 1995, Gary’s love for fishing was channeled into a passion for conservation with the creation of Fish First, a non-profit group dedicated to restoring dwindling salmon and steelhead runs to the Lewis River system in Washington. In 2005, Loomis received the American Sportfishing Association’s Future of Fishing Award, which honors individuals for their novel approaches to increasing fishing participation. In 2008, he was honored by Outdoor Life Magazine as one of the “Outdoor Life 25.” Loomis is also the founding chairman of the Coastal Conservation Association in the Pacific Northwest. SWMC walkers raise over $38,000 Southwest Washington Medical Center’s heart and stroke walking teams raised over $38,000 during May reports Rainy Atkins, Southwest’s chief operating officer and president-elect of the Portland-Metro & Southwest Wash. American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Board of Directors. In addition to being the overall top fundraising organization for walks in Vancouver and Portland , Southwest also earned the distinction of having the top walker, Ken Pasley, who raised $6,400. County Railroad Advisory
Clark County Board of Commissioners are seeking applications for an unexpired term on the 15-member Clark County Railroad Advisory Board. The term expired in December 2011. The County owns a 33-mile short-line railroad that runs from Vancouver to Chelatchie Prairie. The line is commonly known as the Lewis and Clark Railroad or the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad. The board advises the commissioners on how to achieve the maximum long-term return from its investment in the railroad. Applicants should have the following qualifications: Knowledge of transportation and railroad-related issues in Clark County and a willingness to represent a broad spectrum of community interests. Anyone interested should submit a letter of interest and resume by July 6 to Jennifer Clark in the commissioners’ office, P.O. Box 5000, Vancouver, WA 98666-5000. News brief The Oregon Ballet Theatre has raised over half its June goal of $750,000 to stay in business this year. Thus far contributions have accounted for over $417,000.
