Vancouver educator honored with Golden Apple Award Debbie Renner, sign-language interpreter and assistant to the Teacher of the Deaf at Evergreen High School has been selected to receive a 2008 Golden Apple Award for her work in the classroom. Only eight individuals and two programs in grades pre-K-12 were chosen from over 200 nominees throughout Washington. The awards, which are sponsored by KCTS 9, PEMCO Insurance and the School Employees Credit Union of Washington, were created to "Honor committed professionals who are developing lifelong learners," said Bill Mohler, KCTS Television President and CEO. "The teachers and programs being honored are those who are setting the course of our state's future by the efforts they put forth today." In addition to interpretation, Renner is committed to curriculum innovation to meet individual student needs. Examples include personally learning German to help a student with socially appropriate communication challenges who wanted to participate in a mainstream German class, modifying the Washington Driver's Guide for a student with autism who used a motorized scooter and developing a curriculum that simulates real life math experiences where students receive an income, manage a checkbook, fill out job applications and complete tax forms. "Due to Debbie's enthusiasm and hard work, these students are able to take advantage of both social and learning opportunities that they may not otherwise have had access to," said Kathleen Larson, Teacher of the Deaf at Evergreen High School. "She gives these students the skills and confidence to solve problems on their own in high school and beyond." Renner and the other winners
will be honored in a ceremony held in January 2009 in Seattle, which
will be broadcast at a later date on public television stations
statewide. Each winner will receive a "Golden Apple" statuette, $250 and
a $1,500 grant to support their classroom from PEMCO Insurance. Free Drop-off Program Helps Keep Streets Clean and Drains Clear City of Vancouver and Clark County officials are working hard during the leafy season to remind residents that while autumn foliage is beautiful on the trees, leaves can create an ugly problem once they hit the streets. A free drop-off program is available through the city and county to prevent fall foliage from creating curbside trouble. Do NOT rake or blow leaves into the street. Instead, take advantage of a free leaf drop-off program, now through Dec. 20, at a variety of locations around the area. This free program is for residents only, leaves only, and requires use of a coupon. All other types of yard debris or mixed loads of leaves and yard debris will be charged the regular yard debris price at all facilities. Coupons for free leaf recycling are included in City of Vancouver water and sewer utilities bills for September/October, Clark Regional Wastewater District bills for September/October, the fall Curbside Recycling newsletter and many neighborhood association newsletters. Leaf coupons are also available at the free leaf drop-off sites:
Don't want to haul leaves? Mow over them and use as mulch around trees and shrubs or to insulate perennials and rose bushes during the winter. For additional coupons, information or recycling suggestions, please call Clark County's Solid Waste Program at 360) 397-6118 ext. 4352, or the City of Vancouver's Solid Waste Services at (360) 619-4120.
