Mayor calls for Department With the full support of city manager Pat McDonnell, city attorney Ted Gathe and Police chief Clifford Cook, Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard today sent a certified letter today to the Department of Justice requesting an investigation into potential civil or criminal violations in the termination of Vancouver Police Officer Navin Sharma. "Some members of our community have made strong allegations of misconduct against our employees, particularly against the City Manager's Office, the City Attorney's Office and the VPD Command staff, and have asked that we involve the Department of Justice in reviewing the case regarding Officer Sharma," said Pollard. "These questions of reputation and trust in city government require that we take strong measures to ensure citizens' confidence in the management of their city." In 1998, Officer Sharma testified in an internal affairs investigation regarding two fellow officers and claimed retaliation for his testimony. In 2000, he filed a lawsuit against the City of Vancouver for discrimination under federal and state law for allegations arising out of the conduct that was the subject of the internal affairs investigation. That lawsuit was settled in 2001. In 2006, Sharma was terminated following an investigation into allegations that he had made significant errors on 100 police reports related to driving under the influence violations. Following his termination, Sharma filed a federal lawsuit alleging claims of discrimination and retaliation. The case was recently settled by the city for $1.65 million. The full letter to the
