Pink Power blows away one- Planners for the Southwest Washington Medical Center’s Pink Power Strikes Again fundraiser were warily out to come up with $500,000 to complete a campaign to finance a $4 million Breast Care Center in the medical center’s Physicians’ Pavilion. To their delight they came up with an all-time record $815,000 from a single fundraising event in Clark County, in this instance, for the party they threw at Big Al’s Bowling Alley last Thursday. More than 650 people attended the event that included major support from Al and Sandee Kirkwood, owners of Big Al’s, First Independent, The Columbian and Jan and Steve Oliva. Designed specifically for women, the new Breast Care center will provide better access to the many services they need in an environment that is easily accessible and comforting, according to medical center officials.
Mike Stromme named associate Mike Stromme, formerly with the Vancouver School District, has been appointed associate superintendent for Instructional Services and Technology at Education Service District 112, reports district superintendent Twyla Barnes. Stromme succeeds retiring associate superintendent Jon Nelson., who has been with ESD 112 for the past 25 years. Stromme, who also was a Columbia River High School principal, will be working to improve student learning programs in ESD 112’s 30 school districts. Camas school district buys new The Camas School District, which has owned a piece of property on McKever Road for a new elementary school, has decided the site is inadequate and is purchasing a new site in the Hills at Round Lake planned community west of Crown Road. The new 12.27-acre site will be bought for $2,560,000. The new school is expected to be completed in May 2010. Old-time barn dance to raise The 2008 Clark County Historical Society’s fundraiser is a real hoe-down, reports co-chairs Nadine Robertson and Dick Colf. It is an “old-time” barn dance in a real barn on the Dick and Bob Colf horse farm on Cedar Creek east of Woodland. The function, an auction and barbecue, begins with dance lessons at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 31. The band, Lincoln’s Beard, plays soft, southern country rock, according to Susan Tissot, executive director of the historical society’s museum in Vancouver. She says, not necessarily western, more on the country side. Tevis Laspa is the auctioneer. Dress is casual. Denim and boots are expected to prevail. County Registration closes Wednesday, May 21, for the first ever North County “The New Northwest” Business Opportunity Expo, featuring Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. The day-long event, sponsored by the Cities of Battle Ground, La Center and Ridgefield and the Port of Ridgefield, is Thursday, May 29, in the Clark County Fairgrounds event center. The Greenfield keynote speech is at 8 a.m. The expo is designed to present business opportunities in the growing northern half of Clark County. The event includes a continental breakfast, lunch and space-available bus tours. All-day admission is $99. Admission to the keynote speech and lunch is $50. Freeman Keller memorial A memorial service for long-time Clark County real estate businessman Freeman Keller is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in the First United Methodist Church, 401 E.33rd Street. Mr. Keller, who was born in North Dakota, spent most of his life in Vancouver. He died at the age of 91 on May 4. Mr. Keller was well known in the business community and as a community servant. His later life was filled with rewards, including being named the community’s first citizen in 1963. He was a member of the Liar’s Club and a member of many civic organizations Mr. Keller is survived by his wife, Betty, two sons, Freeman Jr. and John, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Pat Crawford, and his brother, Jim. Donations may be made to Medical Teams International, P.O.
